Selina Ooi, a deaf woman of Malaysia, is involved with her job as a multi-media engineer with the KDU University College. She works with websites, flash, graphics and illustrations every day. She hopes she is setting herself up as a great example for the deaf Malaysians to live up to. School districts which send their deaf students to the state school for the deaf are expected to pay for students' education and boarding. In the case of Rhode Island, certain districts refused to pay Rhode Island School for the Deaf. As a result the deaf school filed a lawsuit to collect funds. the court ruled in the deaf school's favor. - Very Hot News Deaf Health different from Hearing Health, or to be specific, ASL Deaf Health different from Other Deaf Health? Yes, according to researchers from the Rochester-based National Center for Deaf Health Research team. The team is saying that rates of obesity, domestic violence and suicide is higher among ASL users. On a more positive side, numbers of ASL smokers are lower than Other Deaf and Hearing smokers. These findings were published in the American Journal of Public Health. Bottom line - does DeafDigest believe these gloomy stats? DeafDigest is always skeptical when stats based on a limited local sample is deemed to be representative of the national ASL Deaf People. - Sunday November 27th The First International Investments, an investment company in Swaziland, promised to give prizes for the top three contestants in the Miss Swaziland Deaf Pageant. The pageant ended 3 months ago and the top 3 winners were still waiting for their promised prizes. A story broke out in a newspaper about this broken promise. Embarrassed, this investment company suddenly gave prizes the next day to these three patient (or impatient) deaf finishers! - Monday November 28th The Deaf Women of Rochester is now celebrating its 30th birthday. - Tuesday November 29th We have another Deaf Restaurant. It is the Mozzeria, a pizza eatery in San Francisco, owned by Russ and Melody Stein. It was not too long time ago when a deaf owned restaurant in Texas opened up. - Wednesday November 30th Louder is the demand by the Deaf Community of Jamaica for interpreters at public events. They have made this demand known with the new Prime Minister. - Deaf Miscellaneous stuff We, in USA, take our video relay services for granted. Not that so in Canada's British Columbia and Alberta provinces. This service will close on January 15, 2012. Reason? No money. ONE REASON WHY SOME DEAF PEOPLE HAVE CI Some deaf people accept CI for different reasons. Some may be late-deafened and a CI will help them follow voices and sounds. Some just want to follow noises - such as police siren, hearing people yelling at them, a firecracker explosion, etc. But there is another reason why some deaf people want CI. They suffer from tinnitus. And for some of them CI helps kill off tinnitus. Always kill off? Yes, in some cases - and no, in other cases. Hearing people hear it, and may "laugh" about the domestic arguments. But we, the deaf, do not know it! A DEAF DOCTOR IN OREGON There was a newspaper story of a doctor in Eugene, Oregon that is deaf. It is Dr. Sharon Meyers. The story said that she is learning sign language and was twice voted as the area's best doctor according to a local newspaper survey. It is not known, however, if she was deaf all her life but trained orally or became late-deafened - two different things. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? this question: did you know there is an operation that will cure deafness? if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series When people find out what I do for a living, one topic that many people immediately bring up is captioning errors.  People are always reading the screens of CART providers and realtime captioners as we write what is being said, and because we are human, there will always be some mistakes.  Captioners and CART providers cannot stop and go back to correct mistakes.  Everyone sees the mistakes that we make. It is very important that users of realtime captioning understand what an acceptable error rate is and what is not acceptable. Unfortunately, even if a captioner is writing at 99.9% accuracy, there will still be 10 misstrokes for every 10,000 steno strokes. People often focus on those 10 misstrokes rather than the 9,990 strokes that are correct. To do a little comparison with something that most of us are familiar with, imagine if you were typing on a computer keyboard and you were typing 10,000 keystrokes without taking a break.  If you only had 10 incorrect keystrokes, you would probably be very happy with your accuracy. Of course, there are some captioners and captioning programs out there that may not be doing a good job, and consumers of captioning should voice their concerns to help to improve the quality.  If there is a mistake in every sentence or if one in every 10 or 20 words is wrong, let the people in charge know that the captioning is not good enough.  Sometimes the people in charge have no idea what good captioning is. THE VALUE OF VOLUNTEERS There was a story in one of these magazines that was titled: Volunteerism Rising as Way to Contribute in Uncertain Economy At TDI, DCARA and NAD in the past where DeafDigest editor worked in these years as a young man, there were always volunteers. They did tasks that saved the agencies a lot of money. TO BE DEAF AND TO BE ISOLATED There are newspaper stories saying that technology will render obsolete our sign language  - and that the future deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their peers - and that deafness will be completely eradicated thanks to the CI and genetical engineering. True or false? DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example: An outstanding deaf football player, that played for one of the best college football teams, was praised for overcoming his deafness. He also wrote a book, detailing his lifelong loneliness and frustrations because of his deafness and thanked football for making him a success story. He was a featured speaker at some deafness awareness events. Alas, he was arrested few years later for the same reasons that we are seeing these Penn State football and Syracuse basketball scandal stories in newspapers these days! Hot DeafNews boring, but important! Drug-induced deafness? By drugs, we are talking about antibiotics, which is supposed to treat something, but according to Peter Steyger, may cause deafness. Steyger, who is deaf, is a research scientist with the Oregon Health & Science University, says that certain antibiotics may cause deafness. His findings were published in the Scientific Reports publication. ....... The Deaf and the Law: Howard Gorrell's lawsuits (deaf activist Howard Gorrell will fight for what he believes - legal rights and legal needs of the deaf; he is currently involved with the lawsuit against state of Maryland over congressional redistricting issue.
