Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates June Dixon-Millar that
departed us. She was quite active with the
Cued Speech community in Great Britain.
Top stories about the deaf:
Unsafe medication is the reason why several thousands
of Chinese children go deaf, according to a newspaper
report.
Guido Van Helten, a deaf Australian artist,
designed a mural that towers 150 feet high
over the harbor at Jacksonville, FL.
It took him one week to complete the painting.
Future deaf business people, that dream of owning
their own businesses, were in attendance at the
District of Columbia Startup Weekend.
The Curfman Gallery, at Rocky Mountain College
in Colorado, is featuring paintings from deaf
artists. This exhibition will continue through
end of January 2017.
The new chair of the Gallaudet board of trustees
is Tiffany Williams.

A DEAF CEO SHOCKED BY FIRING
This is a true story. DeafDigest will not mention who
the person is or what agency it was.
A deaf CEO was not happy about a deaf employee. He and the
deaf deputy CEO both agreed that the employee should be
fired.
The CEO wanted to be careful with words to inform the
employee that he was to be fired during a private meeting
between CEO, deputy CEO and the employee.
During that private meeting, the CEO had to go to the
restroom. When he came back, the employee was already
fired by the deputy CEO (without CEO's permission).
The CEO was angry about it and also fired deputy CEO!

A JOB-HUNTING FRUSTRATION
A deaf man, with a college degree in Computer Science,
was a frustrated job hunter.
At one computer firm, he took the exam and got a
perfect score with no errors.
He was introduced to the company Human Resources
person. That person knew sign language; he learned
signs as a former dormitory counselor at a residential
school for the deaf.
A deaf man with a perfect exam score and a Human
Resources man that knows ASL. This should be great
news for the deaf job hunter.
But the company did not offer him a job! This
deaf man later found a new job but it was not with
computers.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
"What is the most unusual situation you have encountered when working as a CART captioner?"
Realtime captioners often hear this question. Because these services can be provided at any location, many wonderful surprises can sometimes occur. CART captioners have covered many momentous occasions where presidents, heads of state, and other dignitaries have spoken.
People are now using CART at numerous personal events, like weddings, funerals, and bar or bat mitzvahs. CART captioners are traveling around the world to provide access where there was none before.
Realtime captioners are going into many private areas, like doctors’ and therapists’ appointments, 12-step meetings, and other counseling sessions. Captioners can make communication accessible at meetings with personal trainers or exercise classes.
Also, because of remote CART and captioning, the provider can work from home on many occasions. A user of CART services can bring a computer with him or her, and as long as they can get an audio feed to the captioner, they can use the services of that CART captioner.
Some of the most unexpected results often come when trying to provide CART outdoors. What everyone involved has to remember is that it is often difficult to see computer screens in bright sunlight. Also, CART and captioning equipment does not work well in the rain or snow.
Sometimes it seems there is no limit to the new ways people can think of to use CART services. I look forward to many more unique and surprising assignments in the future.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
How serious is the misuse of deaf relay by non-deaf
that pretend to be deaf?
Very serious. DeafDigest will not be surprised if
we find our relay providers take stringent steps
to thwart misuse.
Again, it is a cat and mouse game. A new type of
fraud takes place; a countermeasure is taken to
prevent that particular type of fraud. Only we will
find another new type of fraud, and another new
countermeasure taken - and so on.
editor's note:
this fraud continues as ever, sad to say!
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
School districts which send their deaf students to
the state school for the deaf are expected to pay
for students' education and boarding. In the
case of Rhode Island, certain districts refused
to pay Rhode Island School for the Deaf. As a result
the deaf school filed a lawsuit to collect funds.
the court ruled in the deaf school's favor.
