-- Explaining what is CART
There were some DeafDigest subscribers that did not know
what CART means. CART is spelled as Communication Access
Realtime Translation. If you see captions on local and
national news programs, it is CART. If you also see captions
on TV football and basketball games, it is also CART. If you
watch a movie program or a comedy sitcom with captions it
is not CART.
-- Canada allowing deaf pilots to fly commercial aircraft?
Jordan Livingston, a young Canadian deaf man, is attending
flight training classes at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University in Prescott, AZ. He has dreams of becoming a
commercial pilot and says his CI's allow him to function
as a hearing person, despite his lifelong deafness. Will
Canada allow him to fly commercial aircraft? In USA, it
is not allowed.
-- a big surprise at ASL talent show
San Antonio College in Texas hosted its annual ASL talent
show. It involves ASL students and ASL interpreters showing
their sign language skills. And there was a big surprise!
Interpreting program student Lindsey Lyons was on the stage
to do a performance. All of a sudden, boyfriend Carlos Ryan
came up on the stage. Lindsey was shocked to see him. He
came up to her, and in sign language, proposed marriage.
It resulted in a loud audience applause. Interestingly
enough, the newspaper story did not say if she accepted
the proposal, but DeafDigest assumes she did.
