Dennis was a role model for many young deaf people of Utah to look up to, and also, was a well respected community leader as well as a sports leader. His picture is at: http://deafdigest.com/dennis-platt-deaf-sports-leader/ Top stories about the deaf: A Japanese deaf advocate said if sign language needs to win recognition, the national government won't do anything about it - meaning it requires politics on the local level to get it done. The Tamil Nadu State Federation of the Deaf, in India, is saying that hearing people need to learn sign language. A spokesperson with the Vermont Center for Independent Learning said that her agency is pushing for the deaf to assert their rights, specifically asking for interpreters when the need arises. The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (just our own FCC) has ordered telecommunication carriers to stop charging deaf people on voice call costs, and to just charge them for text use. The San Juan County in New Mexico reached agreement with Department of Justice to provide interpreters for the deaf. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- For postings, announcements and employment ad rates, please email mailto:barry@deafdigest.com -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://deafdigest.com (updated every Monday) -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- READ WHAT THEY SAY Unlock the phone with CapTel® Captioned Telephone! DeafDigest editor took the train. The platform display for the next train said "Gray" line. But the display inside the train said "Blue" line. Both lines have different routes. The PA system announced something, but DeafDigest editor didn't know what it was. And that when the interpreter bills the hospital for "waiting and interpreting" time, the hospital balks, insisting she be paid for "interpreting" time only. COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Have you heard someone make this statement? "I have a friend who is a court reporter. I think I will just have her come in and provide CART at this meeting." Yes, some court reporters do provide CART. However, there are many court reporters who cannot or will not provide CART. What some people may not realize is that not all court reporters use realtime translation in their job. Many of them take down the proceedings on their steno machine and then later translate their steno on a computer. In this way, only the court reporter sees what comes up on the computer screen. Some court reporters may write words like "their," "there," and "they're" the same. When they prepare the transcript, they simply put in the appropriate word. However, if someone is reading their screen, it may be very difficult for an untrained person to figure out what is being said. Other court reporters may have a real fear of letting anyone see what they write, and they may be very uncomfortable allowing someone to read their output. If you need a CART captioner for a meeting, it would be a good idea to ask the court reporters if they feel that they are qualified to provide CART. You really do want someone who is trained in CART. Do not assume that every court reporter can do it. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF being asked - how could a deaf person operate a wireless device? (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry) -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- DEAF HORRORS & NIGHTMARES AT RESTAURANTS -- a waiter serves and abandons you at end of his shift to see a list of past horrors: http://deafdigest.com/deaf-horrors-nightmares-at-restaurants/ -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- For postings, announcements and employment ad rates, please email mailto:barry@deafdigest.com for Special Notes, go to the bottom of the Gold section -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- DeafLaw The Prairie Village Healthcare Center, Jacksonville, IL, has been slapped with a discrimination lawsuit by three deaf residents, alleging discrimination (no interpreters). -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: The Gallaudet and the NTID public relations departments consistently send out news which makes way to the deaf media. One recent batch of news was interesting - with a Hollywood theme, and of course, it is coincidental. The Max Factor Family Foundation is funding scholarships for 90 Californians wanting to attend NTID. And Gallaudet alumni will be profiled in New York's Times Square on the Astro Vision screen. Similar-themed news come in bunches, guess so! -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: There is no danger to North Dakota School for the Deaf being swallowed up by the ever-growing Devils Lake menace. The newspapers were full of stories of the problems the growing Devils Lake is causing the Devils Lake community. The growing river has been swallowing up houses that sit too close to it. The deaf school is about 4-5 miles from the river. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: Many interpreters hate video interpreting; they prefer live, one on one interpreting. why? -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- DeafDigest Copyright 2015 by Barry Strassler, DeafDigest.
