-- two deaf characters in a movie
The movie "The Human Race" has two deaf characters in supporting
roles. The director Paul Hough hoped that a major movie studio would
produce that film - but all major studios were not interested.
Instead of giving up, Hough decided to make the movie himself,
going independent. Result? This movie has won praises at Cannes
and won awards at the movie festivals in Atlanta and Mexico. The
names of these two deaf supporting actors are not known, though.
Hough is not deaf but has encouraged the disabled actors to
perform in movies.
-- winning a ADA case a big joke for deaf medical school student?
Michael Argenyi, deaf and a medical school student at
Creighton University, had to pay out of his pockets for
interpreters. The school refused to provide him with
interpreters. Broke, he was forced to drop out. The
court told the university that ADA regulations were
not followed and ruled in favor of the deaf student.
The jury, however, did not award the student with
monetary damages! It is up to the judge if the
student will get damages - full accommodation and
reimbursement for out of pocket interpreter fees.
If the judge says no damages, then the whole matter
is a bad joke!
- a big surprise about 54 deaf students at University of Texas
there are 54 deaf and hard of hearing students that attend
classes at University of Texas. What is the big surprise
about them? They rarely see each other or mingle socially
with each other! Why? Different reasons - nothing in common
with each other, big campus and easy to be "lost", no efforts
to get them together, etc. The Services for Students with
Disabilities is trying to change it all that!
