Even though the FCC ordered churches to caption their TV programs, there are still some churches that are fighting back. They saying they will go broke if they have to caption. Approximately 80 churches are filing "financial-hardship exemptions". DeafDigest wonders how many of these churches have millions of dollars in assets and are claiming they are broke? Much talk is going on about United Kingdom being broke and cannot afford to fund social services for the deaf. Well, in the South Central part of England, SignHealth won a contract to provide social services for the deaf in the area. Deaf leaders in this area is excited about this new contract. - Very Hot News Effective immediately, Dom Bonura, a veteran administrator of programs of the deaf over the years, is the interim Provost at SWCID. Past provost Mark Myers is now the SWCID Development Officer. - Sunday January 29nd Women may go deaf because of diabetes? Yes, according to a study conducted by the Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan. The important thing is to control diabetes with medication. - Monday January 30th Service agencies in Alabama are worried about the threat of the state slashing funds earmarked for services for the deaf and the disabled. These groups of service agencies are working together to picket the legislators during the budget hearings later in the month. - Tuesday January 31st The court of Appeals threw out a claim by a deaf woman that lack of an interpreter was the cause of injuries she suffered during childbirth. The reason was lack of appropriate paperwork that the deaf patient needed to fill out prior to childbirth delivery. - Wednesday February 1st A Smithsonian publication profiled two deaf sisters that were adept photographers way back in the late 19th century - Frances and Mary Allen. CHANGING ATTITUDE AMONG FEW DEAF PEOPLE In the past, many deaf people (graduates from Gallaudet, NTID and deaf schools) were proud people - deaf, but successful at their jobs and at life. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF FEAR OF THE DEAF Here is another workplace example of deafphobia (fear of the deaf). A hearing woman does not have the strength to twist open a soft drink bottle cap. Her desk is next to a deaf man. She avoids asking that deaf man. She waits a few hours for a "strong" hearing man to come by. This hearing man comes around and immediately twists open the cap. Because of that fear, that hearing woman "suffered" for a few hours without having something to satisfy her thirst! WHAT DID THE LOBBYIST TELL THE DEAF ACTIVIST? A veteran lobbyist became friends with a deaf activist. But the advice the lobbyist gave the deaf person was interesting. The lobbyist said: You just can't care only about deaf-related issues. You have to care about all the issues, both deaf and hearing! The deaf activist was stunned. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? ongoing feud between RID-certified interpreters and non-RID interpreters if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series When some people see a steno machine up close for the first time, they are often amazed that there are so few keys.  They cannot understand how a stenocaptioner or court reporter can write all of the words they write. Because there are only 22 keys plus a number bar on a steno machine, stenocaptioners must use combinations of letters to make other letters.  The only keys actually present on a steno keyboard are STKPWHRAO*EUFRPBLGTSDZ.  All words and phrases and every sound made in the English language must be written using only those letters. The letters on the left-hand side of the keyboard are used for the initial consonants in words, and the letters on the right-hand side of the keyboard are used for the final consonants.  What that means is that a captioner will use his/her left hand for initial consonants, his/her thumbs for vowels, and his/her right hand for final consonants. Stenocaptioners do not depress one key at a time.  Rather, whole words and phrases are written at the same time, as if someone were striking a chord on a piano. COULD PAMELA HICKMAN HELP INDIANA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF? Pamela Hickman, not deaf, was written up in a newspaper in Indianapolis. She is a newly elected member of the City-County Council. As we all know, the Deaf Community has been fighting on two fronts - fighting Gov. Mitch Daniels, a Republican, on his stacking of the school board of directors with hearing people, and fighting HB1367 in the state legislative chambers. Pamela Hickman, a Democrat? What about her? She previously taught at Indiana School for the Deaf before moving on to other endeavors. Possibly because of her experience at the school, she may be sensitive to the needs of the deaf. And if she is an adept politician, she could help mend fences between the Deaf Community and the outside forces (Daniels, legislators)? Politics have a way of making strange bedfellows, never mind that Hickman deals with city-county issues and Daniels deals with state-wide issues! .............................................................. .............................................................. STRUGGLES OF A DEAF PERSON IN AN ISOLATED BRITISH TOWN (a new series - to be run for a number of weeks) In a town where I live, there are about 10 pubs, five sports clubs, several churches, several social clubs, and classes at a community center. And the town square is always full of people walking around. How many of these people are deaf that I could chat in British Sign Language? News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: The National Association of the Deaf hosted a mortgage burning party to celebrate its property paid-up status. Next step for the NAD is to conduct a massive fund raising drive to renovate the building, which is badly in need of repairs and face lifting. The NAD has a roster of nearly 500 benefactors, up from 25 when Nancy Bloch took over as Executive Director nearly a decade ago. Perhaps with 1,000-2,000 benefactors the money will be there for the badly-needed facelift undertaking. (editor's note: The NAD has since then sold the building and has relocated to an office suite in the vicinity) ...... News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: To honor this Super Bowl weekend, an all-time Hollywood All-Pro team was announced. The all-time tight end is Brian Murphy, who "graduated" from Gallaudet University and played for the Washington Sentinels. Is that a joke? Yes and no. This "deaf" tight end caught a winning pass for a touchdown in the movie "The Replacements." This Hollywood All-Pro team consists of "best" players that played in football movies and TV. This poll was posted on the American University on-line newsletter. Unfortunately, this "deaf" Murphy was played by a hearing actor. The producers apparently never realized that Gallaudet has had many great football players over the years and could have selected just one of them for the "deaf" deaf movie role. ...... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: How many times has it happened that a deaf person has been told by his family that he cannot do what he dreamed of doing - because of his deafness. And that by the time the deaf person succeeded, the family, that told him he would not succeed, have passed away without realizing the success of their son! ....
