DeafDigest - 06 February 2015

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, February 6, 2015 -- a surprise student in a sign language class Ahmet Davutoglu is a new student in a sign language class and it is a big surprise. He is the Prime Minister of Turkey! In Turkey, the Prime Minister runs the country's affairs. Why is he interested in sign language? He wants to be able to communicate with the Turkish deaf and to be able to listen to their needs. Do we find Obama or Biden taking ASL classes here in USA? No.   -- reason the deaf lost the closed captioning case Four deaf people filed a lawsuit against Coquitlam's SilverCity Cinemas/Cineplex because of no movie captions. The British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal supported the movie house. Why? Several reasons. The movie complex has captioning equipment. And at the time of the complaint, 19 of their 20 movies were captioned. The person who complained did not remember the name of the movie that was not captioned! And also the person did not properly fill out the complaint paperwork!   -- the deaf ice cream Do we have a Deaf Ice Cream? Well, 85 years ago the Warwick Ice Cream Company opened for business in Warwick, Rhode Island. The founder Charlie Clemente Bucci was the father of four sons, three of them deaf. He wanted the company to provide employment for his deaf sons. Years later, one of the deaf Buccis is Bruce Bucci, a program director in Deaf Studies at Boston University. This ice cream is the most popular one in Rhode Island and it is being marketed right now in China.   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest to make subscription changes, go to http://deafdigest.com, click on the "subscribe" icon and follow screen instructions 2/01/15 Blue edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 2/01/15 Gold edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
