Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Doris Nyquist, a
Milwaukee woman, who departed us on December 30th. She worked with the deaf in the mental health field as an interpreter. Additionally she worked with the deaf at
her church and as a volunteer with agencies serving the
deaf.
Top stories about the deaf:
Frustrated by lack of captions on a TV-captioned movie you are watching, after March 30, 2013, through the internet? If so, FCC wants to hear from you. This agency recently
revised its complaint forms to include these no-captions
internet movies.
Vladimir Putin and the deaf? He would not allow deaf Russian children
to be adopted by prospective parents in USA - but he has allowed
Russian Sign Language to become official, and with it - free textbooks
and interpreters. Is he pro-deaf or anti-deaf or is deaf-neutral?
Retired Deaf West Theatre artistic director Ed Waterstreet is being
honored in a gala ceremony that will be taking place on
February 9, 2013 at Culver City, California. He founded Deaf West
in 1991 and it became a major force in Deaf Entertainment.
Joseph Lewis, a Gallaudet graduate, was written up in a newspaper
in Iowa, detailing his experience working in the White House as
an intern. He previously served as intern with Sen. Tom Harkin's office.
Now an employee in the federal government, he has political aspirations.
A Rhode Island newspaper praised Rhode Island School for the Deaf
director Nancy Maguire Heath for turning the school around after
some recent troubled years. She is not deaf and she replaced a
deaf director who was not doing the job.

DEAF AND LATE-DEAFENED DEAF SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENTS
We have a list of deaf school superintendents that
are deaf and use ASL very well.
We also have some hearing superintendents that have
become late-deafened, mostly because of age.
Should we put these late-deafened superintendents
on the list of deaf superintendents? Or do they still
belong to the list of hearing superintendents?

You are in a long line to have your car inspected by

The inspector talks too much. He explains something

much.

MALTA AND THE DEAF
Malta is a small nation located on the Mediterranean. Population
is small.
Is Malta good to the deaf? No, according to a concerned parent that
wrote in an editorial in a Maltese newspaper.
The parent said Malta basically does nothing for the deaf - be it
jobs, literacy, education, social needs, etc.

LEARNING FROM THE GOOGLE
The Federal government accused Google of anti-trust
monopoly and took this giant to the court room.
While Google and the government reached settlement,
people are saying that Google won.
What did Google do to win (and what Microsoft didn't
do few years ago)?
Google did the following:
- hiring the best lobbyists around and paying them $25
million in salaries
- getting their people to get friendly with those in the
Obama administration
- hiring well known Democrats and Republicans
- getting the best advice from consulting firms
- making contacts with the senators
Why is DeafDigest mentioning this? When we, the deaf,
want something from the US government, we may need to copy
Google's blueprint.
Of course, Google can afford $25 million in lobbyists.
We can't!
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being asked:
is it the first time you have interpreted for him?
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Over the holiday season, many TV stations have featured special
holiday-themed programming. We have seen special sports and
entertainment shows. Now, as the holiday season comes to an end, we
will find many TV shows beginning their new seasons.
Personally, I have seen a number of shows over this holiday season
where the captioning has been absolutely fabulous, but I have also
seen instances where the captioning was very poor or totally
overlooked. Unfortunately, there are people out there who do not
think that captioning is important.
They may try to pay as little as possible, so if that means poor
quality captioning or no captioning, that may be what they will try
to do. They may feel that no one is watching the captioning, so it
doesn't matter.
As caption viewers, we must also be advocates for captioning. If we
see a show where the captioning is horrible, we need to let the cable
companies, television stations, and captioning companies know
this. If the television stations are using people who are
unqualified just because they don't charge very much, we have to
communicate to them that that is not acceptable. We must let them
know that someone is watching the captioning.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
just as when you are hooked to a TV program, the captions
mess up! (doesn't matter if it is closed captioning or
real time captioning)
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw
In Trinidad, a deaf man was accused of robbery with
violence. Not too literate, he was not able to understand
the charges against him in the court. As a result, his
case was postponed while the court will be trying to
find an interpreter for him.
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Better late than never, Joseph G. Demeza passed away on
November 26th. He served as the superintendent at the Ontario
School for the Deaf at Belleville (school since then has been
renamed Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf).
While he earned plaudits and honors for his work with the
deaf, he discouraged use of sign language at his school and
would not hire the deaf as classroom teachers.
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Every newspaper sports pages come up
with year-end list of top 10 biggest
sports news.
And Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind
(USDB) made #2 on the list, even outranking such
Utah teams like Utah Jazz, BYU, University
of Utah, etc.
What did the USDB do to merit a #2 ranking?
It simply revived its long dormant school
athletic program! The school practically
disappeared from the Deaf Schools Athletic
network in the eighties. But it is coming
back now.
(editor's note: while the school has volleyball
and basketball teams, problems continue with funding
and finding coaches every year)
......
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Supporters of ASL were able to send their petition to the
White House for review and response, if any.
The White House people said:
any petition that receives enough signatures will be reviewed by the appropriate policy experts
Policy experts? Who? ASL experts or oral education experts or Cued Speech experts or SEE experts?
.......
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
A deaf person thought his hearing friend said:
my birthday
But the hearing person's face was sad.
Why sad face on birthday?
To play it safe, the deaf person asked the sad hearing
person to write down on a pad. The hearing person wrote:
my mother died
