Top stories about the deaf:
Steven A. Florio has been appointed Commissioner of
the  Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard
of Hearing. He replaces Heidi Reed.
Kate Ritchie, a British TV personality with the
Home and Away program, said she made it a
New Year's resolution to learn sign language
even though there is no deafness in her family!
Advocates of the deaf in the Tampa Bay
(Florida) area said that while there have
been advances in services to the deaf,
it still has a long way to go.
What is the difference between a Deaf Laughter
and a Deaf Humor event? DeafDigest does not
know the difference, but the Miri Deaf Association
(Malaysia) just sponsored a Deaf Laughter event,
yes, using interpreters to make the hearing
audience laugh at these Deaf Antics.
A deaf student in a hearing-only private school
in Rhode Island won his case to be instructed by a
teacher of the deaf, instead of a teacher that
knows nothing about the deaf.

WHO HELPED START THE REGISTRY OF INTERPRETERS FOR THE DEAF?
The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) is the most
important organization in the Deaf Community. Without RID,
we are lost.
Anyway RID was started in 1964 as a result of a workshop
to deal with interpreting issues.
The person whose idea that helped start RID was Dr.
Edgar Lowell. He did not use sign language as he believed
in the oral education of the deaf, yet he is the
Father of RID.
    Deaf History is often funny.

WHAT IS AN EX-ORALIST?
is it a person that graduated from oral school but finally learned
ASL at Gallaudet or NTID?
or
is it a person that always hid his signs at the oral school
that he graduated from?
You decide!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As we begin 2019, it is the time of year when many people make New
Year’s resolutions. For some court reporters and realtime captioners,
their resolutions are to practice their steno writing so that they can
increase their speed and accuracy.
Some people look at captioners as if they were machines. They might think
that all realtime captioners write the same way. But that is not true.
Writing on a steno machine is a skill that must be developed and worked
at. You must practice it and stay in shape in the same way someone must
follow an exercise program for their body.
There are dictation drills and finger exercises that increase your
dexterity and speed. Students who are studying steno must learn to reduce
hesitation and increase their ability to concentrate for long periods of
time.
Just like people who exercise their body, people practicing on the steno
machine should keep a positive outlook and look to the future for the
goals they want to achieve. Above all else, they should try to make it fun
and something they enjoy doing, so that they will stick with their new
"exercise program" in the coming year.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Gesturing and signing are two completely different
things; both methods are not interchangeable.
Yet, how important is gesturing in a classroom
setting? We are talking about hearing gesturing,
not deaf gesturing.
Simply put, it says that hand gestures help the
hearing understand words from a new language.
Big question is - is there a difference between
Hearing Gesture and Deaf Oral Gesturing?
This is another issue good for another round
of research.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Terry Riley, a Coda, is the CEO of the British Sign Language
Broadcasting Trust. For his work in getting sign language
into TV programs he has been honored with a Order of the British
Empire.
