-- a higher court judge says no to a deaf woman
Two years ago a deaf woman was arrested for drunk
driving in New Jersey. While no interpreter was
present, the police officer and the deaf woman
communicated by written notes. And she did not
request an interpreter at that time. After the arrest
she had second thoughts and filed a lawsuit saying no
interpreter was present. The Superior Court judge
agreed with the ruling of the lower court judge,
meaning that her drunk driving arrest still stands.
The woman's attorney said they may appeal the
decision of the Superior Court, meaning next step
is the State Supreme Court.
-- a big challenge for an elected deaf public official
Mojo Mathers, who is deaf, is an elected MPP with the
Parliament in New Zealand. She is now up for re-election.
What is her biggest challenge? It is to win the
re-election. Why? Because many elected deaf public
officials fail get re-elected! For some reason,
the public which voted for the deaf person, will not
vote for that person again.
-- "noises" app for the deaf
Noises are everywhere. Hearing people know it (and hate it)
while many deaf people are unaware. An agency in Singapore
is developing the "noises" app that may help the deaf.
This app has five different vibrating alarms - ambulance,
fire trucks, police sirens, fire alarm and smoke detector.
These alarms come with labels. Will it work? Yes and no. It
will work if the person wants to know what the noises are.
It will not work if the deaf person ignores this app!
