-- a deaf woman in a new sport in Guam
Guam is an island nation and a territory of USA. There is
a new sport for women - football. There is a new football
league - Women's Football League that will begin play this
month. One of the players is deaf. We do have a few deaf
women playing women's football in USA but it is something
new in Guam! The coach said that everyone on the team
works together to help the this deaf player.
-- movie frustrations
A deaf man, in London, went to movie theaters twice recently.
The movie in the first theater did not show full subtitles.
It was subtitled on and off throughout the filming! He
complained to the theater manager and was told the subtitlers
did not correctly size the captions to fit the projector
screen. The second theater announced that the movie will
be subtitled but received a non-subtitled film from the
distributor. Are we lucky to live in USA!
-- a rare politician
Matt Wesaw, not deaf, is the director of Michigan Department
of Civil Rights. How many politicians make deafness their
#1 priority. With Wesaw, it is his #1 priority. He said
deaf people have rights to quality interpreting services,
as well as with their other rights. Politicians love to
talk, love to make promises but almost always, deafness
is never a #1 priority with them! With Senator Tom Harkin,
because of his deaf brother, deafness is a high priority
with him, but certainly not #1. We wish we had more
politicians like Wesaw.
