Elaine Bromka, who is not deaf, is a professional actress, been performing for 30 years. She has credited working with deaf actors years ago for helping improve on her body language. She said that if not for her involvement with deaf theater as a hearing actress, she would not be what she is nowadays! Tina Lannin, a deaf British woman, makes her living as a professional lipreader. She has been asked to read lips of famous soccer players on TV, of highly publicized marriages of famous people. She even admits she can only lipread with a 30-40 percent accuracy. How much are professional lipreaders paid? Between $50 to $150 per hour, depending on supply and demand and degree of difficulty. And for a full day of lipreading, it is about $950.00 - Very Hot News Florida School for the Deaf and Blind has a new president. It is Jeanne Glidden Prickett, the current superintendent at Iowa School for the Deaf. Full press release is at: http://www.fsdb.k12.fl.us/news/board-of-trustees-names-new-fsdb-president/ The FCC is now telling the churches that they must caption their TV programs. A few years back the FCC allowed 300 churches to get away without captions - but not any more. - Sunday October 30th How to help the deaf get jobs and to have them stay in school? This is what the Center for Results in Education and Employment for Deaf Students is trying to do. This group won a $1.3 million federal grant for that purpose. - Monday October 31st Becky Clark, a deaf woman, who once played basketball for the legendary Pat Summitt at University of Tennessee, will serve on the New York City Marathon Psyching Team for the big race on November 6th. She is a licensed psychologist, and for the big race she will help the runners with their mental and emotional needs. - Tuesday November 1st The Nucleus 5 recall by the Cochlear Ltd is probably going to cost this Australian company $160 million. Already the stockholders are not too happy with it. - Wednesday November 2nd There are things we take for granted but without realizing the facts. Well, in the case of SWCID, Howard College has never owned the deaf college property! This college leased the deaf land from the US Department of Education for years. This will change since Howard College is reaching a deal to buy the land from the US government. This means the deaf land be SWCID's own. - Deaf Miscellaneous stuff A controversy has erupted over United HealthGroup's plan to provide low cost hearing tests and hearing aids. Critics are saying this provider is bypassing the physicians and audiologists. ..... EATING AT A DINER When hearing people go to a diner to eat, they often sit on the counter. When a group of deaf people enter a diner, they always sit at a table, not at a counter. Why? The town police force has threatened to ignore 911 calls because of lack of funding. A hearing person can find a way to overcome a 911 shutdown by using a quick series of telephone calls. But for the deaf person, it is scary. If the town has no deaf residents, then this issue is moot. ...................................................................... ...................................................................... SHALE OIL BOOM BYPASSING THE DEAF IN NEW YORK AND PENNSYLVANIA In the lower New York and upper Pennsylvania areas, there is a shale oil boom, which helps the economy. While workers from Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma move to the region to work in the shale oil industry, some local workers are hired to help out. Is the boom helping the deaf find jobs? Hard to say but in a way, yes and no. Deaf people are not being hired for these dangerous jobs because of safety concerns. But the deaf people could be hired by restaurants, hotels, Big Box stores - but only on entry level positions where wages are minimal. This was the impression DeafDigest editor while visiting Elmira, NY over this past weekend. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being asked by a hearing person: can this deaf person see? if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com SOMETHING WE, THE DEAF, OFTEN DO NOT REALIZE Hard of hearing people are more concerned with an issue, that we, the deaf, are vaguely aware of. It is the loop. The loop works with hearing aids to help the hard of hearing people to hear better, at least in public facilities. The trend has been to install more and more loop systems everywhere. This is the reason why more hard of hearing people are smiling. COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Game 6 of the 2011 World Series may have been one of the most exciting World Series games in history.  The St. Louis Cardinals' 11-inning victory over the Texas Rangers received great television ratings.  It was a thrilling event that took 4 hours and 33 minutes to complete. What most people do not realize is the impact that it had on realtime captioners across the country.  Many television stations delay their local news until the completion of the game. Captioners who were scheduled to caption those news broadcasts had to wait patiently for the game to be over in order to complete their evening assignments.  Some of those captioners were scheduled to caption early morning news and other programming the following morning, and they certainly missed out on sleep that night. For those captioners who were Cardinals fans, I suppose it was definitely worth the wait. AN ACCOMPLISHMENT AT A BIG BOX CHAIN Big Box chains (Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, etc) have many, many deaf employees. Unfortunately for most of them they work at entry level positions and promotions with fat pay raises are rare. It is not that they cannot handle important jobs - they can, but they are not given opportunities. But for one deaf person, he just won a job transfer with a big promotion (and big pay raise). He started in one state, was transferred to a second state, and then just recently transferred to a third state - and is now a mid-level administrator, in charge of his own department. He is not "hard of hearing" but an "ASL/Deaf Culture" person! For reasons of privacy, DeafDigest is not mentioning that person's name. .............................................................. .............................................................. weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://deafdigest.com/ updated every Monday .............................................................. .............................................................. TO BE DEAF AND TO BE ISOLATED There are newspaper stories saying that technology will render obsolete our sign language  - and that the future deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their peers - and that deafness will be completely eradicated thanks to the CI and genetical engineering. True or false? DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example: A deaf student at a hearing college, who thought he was too good for either Gallaudet or NTID, realized how bad it was at his hearing college. Lonely, isolated and feeling abandoned, he came home every weekend. He made no effort to try to fit into the weekend collegiate social life and events. He gave up after a semester and enrolled at Gallaudet. next week - another example .............................................................. .............................................................. Hot DeafNews boring, but important! A while ago when the BART, the rapid train system serving the California's Bay Area, blocked passengers' use of their cell phones, it upset the Deaf Community. It was because deaf passengers have no one to turn to in case of emergencies. Well, it was announced that the BART board has decided to postpone the voting of this anti-cellphone policy. Is it good news for us, the deaf? Time will tell! ....... The Deaf and the Law: The ADA regulations constantly change - either for improvement or to keep up with the changing times, but the principle remains the same. the Department of Justice says: The ADA's fundamental requirement remains for businesses and agencies to ensure effective communication by providing appropriate auxiliary aids and services; updates range from expanded definitions that reflect advances in technology to clarification about how businesses and agencies facilitate face-to-face interactions. ...... News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: The Brentwood post office in Washington, DC, hit by the anthrax, has nearly 30 deaf employees. Inadequate interpreting services for these deaf employees has been the issue raised by civil rights group. The postal officers claimed they have complied the interpreting needs of the deaf. Not so, says the deaf group. ...... News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: The Metuchen Library in New Jersey is putting up for auction a rare book, titled "Herball, or General History of Plantes," that was published in 1633. The value of this book is estimated to be $2,500 or higher. This book is about 2,800 woodcuts of medicinal plants and is written in Elizabethan English. What about it? Well, this book was donated by Gertrude Rohdenburg way back in the early 20th century. Gertrude was deaf and her donation somehow got lost in the library archives and was not discovered until recently. Because the library has no use for that book, it is being put up for auction. ...... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: An incident took place at an open air market in Zimbabwe. A deaf man, selling his wares from his stall, had a sign posted in front - saying that the vendor is deaf. And beneath that sentence are listed prices. Yet it did not stop a customer from verbally abusing him. An upset observer had to intervene on behalf of the deaf vendor. ....
