-- Which chain restaurants discriminate against the deaf?
There was a poll, asking which restaurant chains discriminate
against the deaf, especially at the drive-ins. Those mentioned
that discriminate were - Burger King, Fast Casual, McDonald's,
Steak 'n Shake and Wendy's. This type of discrmination may
disappear slowly over the next few years as more and more
restaurants are installing touchpads, replacing the speakers.
-- deaf people angry at anti-ASL judge
DeafDigest mentioned last week that a judge in Maryland, during
the trial of a deaf defendant, would not allow ASL or even
facial expressions in the courtroom except for interpreters'
sign language. Many people are very angry about it - and there
is talk of the American Bar Association establishing guidelines
to determine proper (and improper) use of communications by
everyone in the courtroom.
-- another FCC ruling that is supposed to favor us
The FCC issues so many rulings that it is hard to remember
which ruling is which and so on. Anyway FCC has ruled that
deaf people shall get captions on over-the-top streaming to
televisions, such as game consoles, set-top boxes, tablets
and other wireless devices. This is the good news. The bad
news is that providers have three years to caption their
devices. Knowing these providers, they will file waivers,
and hire attorneys to try to delay the captions. So, this
3-year wait might very much be a 4-5-6 year wait!
