-- A county police force establishes a Deaf Unit
Nottinghamshire is a county of one million residents
in Great Britain. This county police department
just established a Deaf Unit to make communications
easier with the deaf. Four police offiers and three
department assistants have been assigned to that
new unit. Do keep in mind the Washington, DC
police department has four officers that deal
with the deaf. A picture is at:

-- impossible to use old fashioned TTY machines
The FCC requires TTY access at public facilities -
but this is often a joke. It is obsolete, and
there are other easier ways to communicate -
these portable text phones. But for many deaf
people in prisons, they're simply out of luck.
Their communication issues with the outside
world is difficult, if not impossible. It
was the focus of a big story today in a
newspaper.
-- a TV ad for deaf in Malta
Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, a British ad agency
that places ads in TV programs in Malta,
likes to show funny stories. One such
ad featured a deaf woman, seeing her
dog swallow her hearing aid. This ad
is being shown in British Sign Language
- without - captions. Not very often
in USA do we see such voice-less,
caption-less, ASL-only ads!
