-- USA was a big embarrassment in the Deaflympics
In the past Deaflympics USA normally did very well, winning
many medals. But in Sofia last week, it was a big disappointment.
USA only won 9 gold and a total of 29 medals to finish 6th,
behind Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Belarus and China.
Russia won a total of 177 medals. Are the Russians better
than us? No - but our best deaf athletes stay home.
-- 25 deaf people kicked out of apartment building
In Johannesburg, South Africa, the landlord kicked out
about 25 deaf people from his apartment building. These
deaf people were left on the streets, being homeless.
They were paying rent, but the landlord still kicked
them out.
The city Department of Children, Women and People
with Disabilities is not too happy about it.
-- a vibrating hearing aid!
Mike Freeman, not deaf, is an inventor. He has just
invented a hearing aid that vibrates. It is hidden
in a baseball cap and vibrates when it catches sounds
and voices. Why vibration? The inventor says it is better
than a CI or with a real hearing aid, but warns it is
not for every deaf person, just for some deaf people.
Cost? Just $199. This device was demonstrated at a
conference in New York last week.
