Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Timothy Owens,
Louisville, Kentucky, that departed us. He was
an interesting deaf person that wore many hats.
He was a long time ASL Interpreting Studies
professor at University of Louisville. He
was also involved with the National Catholic Office of the Deaf and also of the Mini Deaf Olympics. Not just only that, he also founded
the Deaf Community Center. His motto was:
Today is a new day
A picture of him is at:

This just in:
Nyle DiMarco, who is deaf, has been named America's Next Top Model. He is the last
winner, because the show will not be shown
anymore.
Top stories about the deaf:
The Incommunities, a housing association in
Yorkshire (UK) has been conducting training
classes for its staff to learn to be sensitive
to the needs of deaf and disabled tenants.
The government of India is planning to offer
special health insurance plans for the deaf
at reduced rates.
Simeon Hart, who is deaf, is running for MP,
representing the British town of Oldham.
He represents the Green Party.
Australia discriminating against its own
Aboriginals? Hope not, because the state
government shut down the Perth Aboriginal children's ear clinic, shutting out these
deaf Aboriginal children.
Police officers of Bangor, Maine have been
taking sign language classes to communicate
with deaf residents.

TWO DIFFERENT NATIONAL SIGN LANGUAGES IN INDONESIA
The deaf of Indonesia is stuck with two different
sign languages.
It is two - because one was created by the hearing
and the other one created by the deaf.
The deaf are complaining that the signs created
by hearing is too difficult for them to understand.
This is the reason why the deaf leaders created
their own deaf-friendly deaf sign language!

SAME OLD STORY WITH A NEW HEARING EMPLOYEE
It is always the same old story with a new
hearing employee.
He has never met a deaf person before. He becomes
very friendly, learning fingerspelling and some
signs and chatting with him from time to time.
Suddenly he gets tired of the deaf and ignores
him every day.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being constantly asked this question:
how long have you known this deaf client?
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
With all the different areas of terminology that they might have to deal with, I am sometimes asked if realtime captioners or CART providers specialize in particular areas.
In today's fast-paced, technical environment, it seems like every industry has its own set of acronyms and lingo. It is impossible for someone to be an expert in every area.
Captioners do have areas of strength and weakness, but there is no formal list that an organization like the National Court Reporters Association keeps of areas of specialization for captioners.
Many broadcast captioners work with news broadcasts every day. There are some captioning companies that work primarily in sports captioning.
CART providers see a wide variety of subjects, especially in the college classrooms. You might be working with a pre-med major one day and a French literature major the next day.
Sometimes we are learning along with our consumers, but occasionally we try to find someone more qualified to cover a class we feel unable to handle.
In the end, each captioner or CART provider will make a decision about whether they feel qualified to provide services for a particular event. Unfortunately, sometimes detailed information isn't given to the captioner/CART provider in advance about the topics to be discussed, so we could unknowingly "get in over our heads."
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
trying to lipread a person with a stuffed mouth
(cigarette, apple munching, toothpick, etc)
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw
An important issue when deaf people sign Power
of Attorney affidavits is to make sure they
fully understand what it is. All the more
reason for an interpreter to witness the
Power of Attorney signatures.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
We are always reading about advances in medicine
and technology, all in the name of combating deafness
or at least trying to eradicate it.
The Time Magazine ran a special edition, titled
"The Year in Medicine".
Any mention of deafness in this special issue?
Nope!
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
We have a Deaf Wine!
It is The Three Deaf Musketeers, a label by
deaf winemaker Rusty Wales, which earned
honorable mention honors in the WineMaker
Magazine.
His wine was considered one of the 20 best
in a 4,000 entry field!
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
People in India were shocked that their top deaf
cricket player was forced to sell snacks at a
street kiosk for a living. This cricket player
helped India win the 2005 World Cricket Cup f
or the Deaf.
Not sure why it is shocking? Many Americans
earn a living selling food as street vendors
or via food trucks. We even have a few deaf
people making good money selling food that
way.
