- What the best stories are saying about the deaf?

If you are deaf and live somewhere in the northeastern
part of Pennsylvania and get into trouble, be prepared
if you are taken to Magisterial Judge Jonathan M Wilcox
for a hearing. He is fluent in ASL. He is campaigning
for re-election; the press release announcing his
campaign plans said:

A hard of hearing trader was caught by the FBI on an
insider stock trading scandal. Samir Barai, who is
deaf but functions as a hearing person, owns his
Barai Capital hedge trading firm. He uses a
special high tech sound system, connected to
his telephones, in order to keep up with voice
communications. Barai is accused of insider
trading - focusing on the secrets of the
Marvell Technology Group in hopes of reaping
a huge profit.






- Very Hot News

The Vatican refused to accept lawsuit papers filed
by a deaf man who claimed years of abuse at a
deaf Catholic school in Wisconsin during the
sixties and seventies. The attorney for the Vatican
said the lawsuit should be served through normal
diplomatic route. The deaf man's attorney said
it was an act of foot-dragging by the Vatican.




- Sunday January 30th

The Toronto Deaf-Blind community is upset over the threat
of the city government to cut funding on accessible
bus routes. They would lose their independence if they
had no access to the city bus system.



- Monday January 31st

The Bangladesh government has hinted that the Bangladesh
Sign Language would be officially recognized - as a way to
make the public aware of the needs of the deaf.



- Tuesday February 1st

Because the state of Texas is broke, funds have to be cut.
Seriously impacting the deaf residents of San Antonio was
the elimination of the Deaflink program. It sent emergency
pages to deaf households - bad weather, evacuations, biohazard spills, etc. Needless to say, the deaf community
is upset




- Wednesday February 2nd

The unrest in Egypt has caused the DCARA and Ohlone College,
both in Northern California, to cancel the planned Egyptian
Deaf Culture event. Concern was expressed for eight deaf
Egyptian students, attending classes in the area and
were to be part of the planned event.

AN IRONY IN BECOMING LATE-DEAFENED
A hearing man, for many years, was always angry
with his parents because they did not wear their hearing
aids.
Yet, this same hearing man became late-deafened as he
got older. And he refused to buy a hearing aid or to
get help to deal with his late-deafness.

A DEAF CLUB FOUND ITSELF WEALTHY
A true story during the seventies. A deaf club
in New York City changed its treasurer. These
treasurers were responsible for club money and club checking and savings accounts.
One treasurer received a very big check from
a sale of a stock. He filed it in the club office file cabinet and forgot all about it.
The new treasurer looked through all folders in
the file cabinet and was very shocked to find the
check, that was sitting for a few years!
He went to the bank and was able to deposit
that old check - and suddenly the deaf club,
struggling with money, became rich!

A DEAF-BLIND PATRON AT A CLUB FOR THE DEAF
In response to Rene Pellerin's Gold weekly
article on the Deaf-Blind, a deaf club manager
shared a tale with DeafDigest.
When the deaf-blind patron comes to the
deaf club and order a drink, he would hand out
the paper currency to the bartender and request
that he know of the change in exact currency
denomination order.
As an example, if the patron hands out a
$20.00 bill for a $1.00 soft drink, the bartender
would have four singles on top, then a five
and then a 10 at the bottom. The patron then
would rearrange the denominations in his
wallet to his satisfaction. An example is folding
the larger denomination as a way of hiding
larger bills.


AN INVISIBLE, ALMOST-PERMANENT HEARING AID
Is there such a thing as an almost-permanent
hearing aid that is also invisible?
There was a story being circulated of such
a device that one would never take it off for
about 4 months. It is invisible because it is
hidden in one's ear canal.
It is not being mass marketed; rather a few
hearing aid clinics is selling it.

A PRO HOCKEY PLAYER: A HEARING AID OR A CI
Mattias Ritola, deaf in one year, plays hockey for Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League.
He has serious issues with Meniere's disease, which is what many deaf people suffer, including DeafDigest editor!
There have been deaf people with either vertigo or with
Meniere's disease that get implanted with a CI - not to hear
better but to wipe out these ugly thing inside one's head.
Anyway this hockey player has been recently outfitted
with a hearing aid, not in his deaf ear but in his hearing
ear.
He is hoping it will wipe out Meniere's disease!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

Have you heard people make these statements?

"We don't need a CART provider because we already have ASL
interpreters scheduled for this event."  "We will just have CART,
and then we won't need the sign language interpreters."

These statements were made by people who do not understand the needs
of people who are deaf or have a hearing loss.  CART and ASL
interpreters are not in competition with one another.  They are not
interchangeable.  They serve different purposes for different
segments of the population.

There are people who are late-deafened who do not know sign
language.  How could an ASL interpreter help them understand what is
going on?

There are also people whose first language is ASL, and they have
difficulty reading a CART screen.  They need the accommodation in
their primary language:  ASL.

People who work with the public must understand that ASL is not just
English using your hands.  It is a separate language.  It is not
something someone with a hearing loss can learn in a few weeks.  Its
grammar and syntax are different from the English language.

In order to make a large event totally accessible for people with a
hearing loss, you cannot choose between ASL interpreters or CART. 
You really need to have both forms of access.




PUNISHMENT IN ARMENIA
Armenia, a small country in Europe, has about 4,000
deaf people.
They, like all of us, rely on sign language and captions
when we watch TV. In the past two Armenian TV stations had
sign language interpreters on some of their programs.
All of a sudden, these two TV stations stopped using
interpreters. These deaf people screamed.
As a result, the Armenian National Television and Radio Commission
revoked the broadcasting licenses of these two TV stations.
Why were use of interpreters stopped? Because these TV
stations did not want to pay 50,000 drams per month for the
cost of these interpreters?
Well, how much is 50,000 drams in USA funds? Just $140.00 !

The Deaf and the Law:

The Department of Justice reached agreement with
H&R Block to provide interpreters for deaf clients,
and to train their employees to be sensitive to
the communication needs of the deaf. This law suit
was filed by a deaf resident of Texas.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Ground has been broken at the New York Ave & Florida Ave
intersection in NE Washington, DC for a New York Avenue
metro line.
This line is just several blocks away from Gallaudet
University. It will be the harbinger of a high tech
boom in Gallaudet's backyard.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Western Union,
which got out of the telegram business just a few
days ago.
Whether Western Union realizes it or not, it has
an enduring Deaf Heritage:

- Samuel Morse, who invented the electrical telegraph,
was married to a deaf woman
- Amos Kendall and Samuel Morse were close friends
and business associates. Kendall's estate in
Washington, DC is where Gallaudet University is
located
- the first telegram sent by Morse went to Baltimore,
thru miles of cables, which went across the land
where Gallaudet is located
- in the early days, deaf people were able to send
telegram cables to convey vital messages
- Western Union surplus Model 15 and Model 19 machines
formed the backbone of the Deaf Community TTY
network

Who is more important - in getting deaf bills passed?

A full time lobbyist or a non-lobbyist who makes it a point
to frequently make contact with the legislators

Above was the comment from a deaf non-lobbyist who has
personally urged the legislators to introduce his
bills during this legislative session in a state. And
both bills, already introduced, is now into the
legislative system

All these four books were designed by Wesley Lauritsen,
a deaf man who served as athletic director at Minnesota School for the Deaf (now Minnesota State
Academy for the Deaf) for many years during the mid-20th
century.

In these days there were no computers that handle
everything in sports and with scorekeeping. Everything
had to be done by hand, and Lauritsen saw a business
opportunity in marketing and selling these specially
designed books to fellow coaches and athletic directors
everywhere. It was a lucrative side income for Wesley.



DeafDigest editor has many deaf-related book in his
private home library. Some books are still in print;
some books are out of print. Some books are old;
some books are recent.

Qualifications:  Earned Doctorate in Deaf Studies, Linguistics, American Sign Language (ASL), or closely related field of study.  ABD candidates will be considered but must have completed the doctorate at the time of appointment (August 2011).  General knowledge of linguistic principles of ASL and an understanding of sign language interpreting processes with ASL as the foundation.  Possess strong and effective teaching methods in various aspects of ASL and/or related courses in Deaf Studies.  Extensive knowledge of Deaf Culture and the Deaf community.  Evidence of successful teaching experience at the college level.  Demonstrated evidence of recent scholarly publications or equivalencies and activities or evidence of potential for such scholarly accomplishments.  Ability to interact effectively with both Deaf and hearing people.  Evidence of positive relationships and collegiality with university students, staff, and colleagues.  Evidence of participation in ASL/Deaf Studies and Deaf community organizations on local, state, and national levels.  Commitment to Deaf bilingual/bicultural experience and its foundation in basic human rights.  Native/native-like fluency in ASL.  Basic understanding of curriculum development.   Demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population.

Responsibilities:  Teach American Sign Language and Deaf Studies content courses.  The standard teaching load is twelve (12) units per semester (plus committee assignments).  A reduced load will be assigned during the first year of teaching.  The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department (including curriculum and program development); engage in scholarship and community service and to remain current in their field; serve on departmental, college, and/or university committees, and to participate in other service as needed.

LOCATION: Scranton, PA

THE SCHOOL:
Founded in 1880, the Scranton School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (The Scranton School) continues its tradition of excellence by providing quality educational services and a complete extracurricular program to deaf and hard-of-hearing children from birth through Grade 8 to the students and families of northeastern Pennsylvania. The Scranton School maintains an all inclusive communication/language environment with an emphasis on fluency in English and American Sign Language.

At the Scranton School, it is strongly believed that education is a lifelong process and the school strives to be a total learning environment for deaf & hard-of-hearing children. The Scranton School is a program of the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD). The (WPSD) is a non-profit school with high academic expectations. WPSD provides very high quality educational services and a complete extracurricular program to Deaf and hard-of-hearing children from birth through Grade 12. Serving over 320 students from more than 100 school districts and 30 counties, WPSD is the largest comprehensive center for deaf education in Pennsylvania.

During the 2009-2010 school year, The Scranton School has leased the 10-acre state-owned Green Ridge campus. With legislation pending, the campus will be sold to Scranton-based Marywood University. Looking toward the future, The Scranton School has purchased the 100-acre former Lourdesmont School property in nearby Clark Summit, PA for $2.4 million. Classes for preschool through 8th grade and a high school for students in Applied Studies will continue at the Green Ridge campus for the 2010-2011 school year, while renovations to the former Lourdesmont School are completed. Renovations to the residence hall were completed at the end of August 2010 in time for residential students to live at the new campus and attend classes on the Green Ridge campus. All of The Scranton School operations will move to new campus in the fall of 2011.

SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director of The Scranton School will report to the Chief Executive Officer of The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD). The ideal candidate will be a collegial individual who possesses a strong background with the following: at least five years experience as a high level administrator at a school, preferably a school for deaf children. He/she must have fluency with English and ASL. A Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Leadership is required.  Other duties and responsibilities include:

- Implement and monitor the budget of the School, recommending budget needs for the School to the Chief Executive Officer yearly.

- Implement personnel policies and interview prospective staff along with Human Resources, making hiring recommendations to the CEO.

- Assure that facilities are well maintained, recommending capital improvements to the CEO.

- Serve as the School's liaison with Intermediate Units and School Districts.

- Recruit and retain students. Involved heavily with marketing of the school and Public Relations.

- Represent the School at various community functions, serving as the "face" of the school in the community.

- Oversee the Principal, assuring that the educational program is meeting various student needs and that an appropriate array of support services is offered.

- Oversee the Dean of Students, maintaining a safe and nurturing residential program and assuring that an array of co-curricular opportunities is offered.

- Maintain a positive relationship with parents, providing parent education opportunities and maintaining a Parent/Staff Organization.

- Offer educational opportunities to the community, assuring that ASL classes are regularly offered within the community and planning regular Deaf Cultural experiences.

CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:
- Certification or eligibility for certification in Educational Administration and/or Education of the Deaf
- FBI Clearance
- PA State Police Criminal Clearance (Act 34)
- PA Child Abuse History Clearance

SPECIALIZED TRAINING, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- 5+ years experience as a high level administrator at a school
- Master's Degree in Educational Administration or Leadership
- Fluency in both ASL and English

The Sign Language Proficiency Interview level (SLPI) for position is "Advanced". The minimum level accepted at hire is "Advanced".

A valid driver's license is required.
