-- Bad Man Dennis Rodman's reason for the North Korean visit
Dennis Rodman, NBA's most famous Bad Man, is ready for a
basketball game betwen past professional basketball players
and a team of North Korean all-star players on dictator
Kim Jong Un's birthday. What is one of the reasons for
the game? He said proceeds from the game would go to a
mystery charitable organization. Mystery? He said it
would go to a charity for the deaf. Will Rodman keep
his promise? Would the dictator grab the money for
himself?
-- turning down a VRI at a hospital
A deaf ASL-fluent signer had to be taken to the
hospital emergency room. He was critically ill
and he was dazed and confused. The mother went
with him to the hospital. At the hospital emergency
room, the medical technician turned on the VRI.
The mother said no, saying her son was in no
shape to clearly sign ASL or understand ASL.
The mother was told it was the policy of the
hospital to use VRI. The mother still refused.
After some tense moments, the hospital gave up
and sent in a real live interpreter!
-- another deaf player in NFL
from time to time DeafDigest has mentioned
Derrick Coleman as NFL's deaf player. Actually
there is another one - Washington Redskins'
Reed Doughty. The difference is that Reed
functions as a hearing person; no one would
really realize how badly deaf Reed is, whereas
everyone knows how deaf Derrick is. What
about Reed's deafness? He relies on a special
helmet to allow him to communicate with his
teammates during games and practices. Many
members of Reed's family are deaf. And Reed
often backs out of social situations because
it was so tiresome to try to catch what people
were saying - different from one on one situations.
ASL? Both Reed and Doughty do not know ASL.
