DeafDigest - 07 January 2016

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, January 7, 2016 -- a Grand Slam deaf tennis player In tennis, Australian Open is part of the Grand Slam (French Open, Wimbledon and US Open). Never in the past has a deaf tennis player competed in a Grand Slam tournament, let alone competing in any of these big weekly tournaments. South Korean tennis player Duckhee Lee is deaf and is just 17 years old. He will be competing at the Australian Open, competing against the world's best tennis players. Lee's picture is at: http://deafdigest.com/deaf-tennis-player-at-australian-open/   -- a refusal to write leads to a lawsuit A deaf person applied for a job in Texas. Because there was no interpreter with him, he asked the company person to write down instructions. The company person refused. As a result, the deaf person filed a discrimination lawsuit. DeafDigest wonders if it is possible that the hearing person was illiterate, thus avoiding writing notes?   -- deaf rescuer wins an award It has been in the news all week that Steven Peterson, a deaf resident of Duluth, Minnesota, rescued a deer, stuck in an icy river. He was driving and suddenly saw a deer struggling to get out of the ice. He risked his life to get the deer out of the ice. Yesterday PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) honored him with a "Compassionate Action Award."     Latest deaf jobs: http://deafdigest.com/category/jobs/ or click on "jobs" past Mid-Week & morning editions: http://deafdigest.com/category/mid-week-news/ 01/03/16 Blue and Gold editions at: http://deafdigest.com/newsletters/
