-- a newspaper headline that could fool us
A newspaper headline said:
Coleman signs for Seahawks fans in U Book Store appearance
It refers to Derrick Coleman, the deaf member of the Seattle
Seahawks football team. Does Derrick use ASL? No. He is oral,
but the headline said that he "signs" for deaf fans. It
was trying to say he was "signing" autographs for his fans.
-- comments by Evelyn Glennie, world's greatest musician
Deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie says that her body is
like her big ear. In an interview she said she depends
100 percent on lipreading since she does not use British
Sign Language. She uses her hands, arms, cheekbones,
skull, stomach, etc to listen to music. As a young
woman she applied for the Royal Academy of Music in
London. They turned her down because of her deafness.
She wouldn't give up and tried again and was
accepted. Rest is history, as she is one of the
world's best - and - wealthiest - musicians!
