-- a deaf competitor in Russia
The Winter Olympics have ended but going on right now
is the Winter Paralympics at these same venues in
Sochi. Normally very few deaf athletes take part in
the Paralympics because only physically disabled
athletes are allowed. Deafness is not considered
physically disabled. Anyway, there is a deaf
participant - Nicole Roundy, who is an above-the-knee
amputee, in addition to being deaf. She is taking
part in the boardercross events. Boardercross is a
form of snowboarding. In the past, however, not too
many deaf, physically disabled athletes took part
in these Paralympics.
-- a deaf-owned radio station
A new radio station has been open for business in Methow
Valley, a rural area in Washington. It is the Methow
Valley Radio. It is being operated and managed by Dave
Corrigan, who is deaf. Don't know if he has been deaf
all his life or if he has become late-deafened, but he
functions as a hearing person. He is not able to handle
the sounds that comes with these radio programs. Instead
his wife and his daughter, both hearing, work on these
sounds. We do have a few deaf DJ's on the radio, but a
deaf person operating a radio station? It is new to DeafDigest.
-- hearing sounds from lenses and genes?
What is Optogenetics? Sort of mixing lenses with genetics.
It is a new field in technology. Scientists at Germany's
Freiburg Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Physics are
working on lenses and genetics to try to help the deaf
to hear better. They are implying that their method may
be better than CI! DeafDigest does not know exactly how
it works.
