Top stories about the deaf:
Does American River College, a two year college
really include their deaf students in everyday
campus life? An angry student wrote in a
campus newspaper, saying diversity does not
equal inclusion.
It was estimated that in the Philippines that
nearly 99 percent of deaf people do not have jobs.
If this is true, then it is sad.
In one state in India, a TV station has established
a sign language version of local news.
The Northern Essex Community College reached agreement
with University of New Hampshire-Manchester to train
students to become ASL interpreters.
Montreal is now making it a priority to make
public transportation fully accessible to the deaf.

KICKING OUT THE DEAF GAMBLERS
Many Americans love to gamble. Many deaf people also
love to gamble. There are many deaf poker tournaments
everywhere.
For many years the annual national deaf basketball
tournament, run by American Athletic Association
of the Deaf (AAAD) attracted well known deaf
gamblers. They liked to place bets on their favorite
deaf teams.
Not any more. The AAAD is also no more, replaced
by USA Deaf Basketball Association (USADB). And the
USADB officers are strict. Anyone caught gambling
on tournament games will be kicked out of the gym!

Lip reading tale
At a friend's house, the deaf person thought the friend said:
Do you want to play the game "Story"?
The friend actually said:
Do you want to play the game "Sorry"?

LIVING IN A NEIGHBORHOOD
It is not always easy for the deaf to mingle with
the hearing in a neighborhood of family houses.
In the past DeafDigest editor lived in a nice
Annapolis, MD neighborhood. He would walk the dog
and wave to neighbors with a smile on his face.
He did not realize, until years later that one
neighbor was a former Washington Redskins football
player, another neighbor was a former Washington
Wizards basketball coach, another neighbor was a
former athletic director of the US Naval Academy
and a fourth neighbor was a famous horse
racing jockey!
A hearing person who loves sports would know
immediately. A deaf person who loves sports would
not know!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
A number a television stations across the country have recently announced
their intentions to replace live realtime captioners with automated
technology for the captioning of their live events.
While realtime captioners and court reporters have embraced technology
over the years as an aid to do their jobs more effectively and
efficiently, we have seen that technology without the human element
“invariably produces subpar captioning and will negatively affect
accessibility to local news for millions of Americans, as a statement
released by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) says.
People who rely on captioning deserve much better than what is currently
and in the future proposed to be offered to them in some areas using
artificial intelligence and automated speech recognition.
I have often commented in this article about the importance of contacting
your television stations and distributors, the FCC, and other people who
are responsible if you see captioning that is not acceptable. Now is a
time when it is more important than ever to let your opinions be heard.
If you see subpar captions, here is a link where you can file a complaint.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The painful question facing Daniel Snyder, the owner
of Washington Redskins, the team the Washington, DC
Deaf Community roots for - is to either file an appeal or
to own up to his defeat in the Federal Courtroom.
This refers to the Fedex Stadium captioning lawsuit
that he lost, and which was filed by three deaf
plaintiffs.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Deaf Research, for the time being, at the Library of
Congress, is impossible - because of the federal government
shutdown.
