Top stories about the deaf:
The Kenyan deaf education officials have said interpreter
shortage is a serious issue.
The New Zealand deaf community is asking that the
human rights commission order TV captions of the
upcoming Rugby World Cup matches, the #1 event
among these sports loving natives. It is akin to
the Super Bowl not being captioned!
Australia says no to Gaye Prudence Lyons, a deaf woman,
that wants to serve on the jury, saying laws do not
permit it. Deaf Community is upset.
The Staples Mill Amtrak station in Virginia has been
accused for discriminating against a deaf passenger.
He was not able to catch his name on the public
announcement and no one cared to alert him of
his turn to come to the window.
Samsung is improving on its captioning technology
in Europe in order to make TV watching enjoyable
for deaf Europeans as well as for deaf tourists
from USA.

HOTEL TV SETS, HALF FINE, HALF NOT
DeafDigest editor went on vacation for almost
two weeks and stayed at several hotels.
Half of the hotels had TV sets that were easy
to turn on captions. Other half had TV sets that
were very difficult to turn on captions.
It all depends on the TV brand. Some brands
are so easy - other brands very difficult.

NOT REALIZING IT IS SIGN LANGUAGE FOR DEAF
DeafDigest editor and his wife were chatting in ASL
at a restaurant.
The waiter saw both of them chatting in ASL and
thought it was HSL - Hearing Sign Language!
He was really shocked to realize that HSL was
really ASL.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
interpreting for a deaf client that does not know sign language,
does not know how to lipread, and is clueless as far as body
language pantomime is concerned; and even worse - does not
have command of the English language
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
"How do you write that so fast?"
In order to achieve the speed necessary to caption at over 200 words
per minute, stenocaptioners write whole syllables or words in a
single stroke. They stroke multiple keys at one time, much like a
chord on a piano.
This is different from someone typing on a computer keyboard, who is
typing one letter at a time. The captioner uses his or her left hand
for initial consonants, the thumbs for vowels, and the right hand for
final consonants.
If we look at the word "sat," the "S" would be stroked with the left
hand. The "A" would be stroked with the thumb. The "T" would be
stroked with the right hand. All of these keys would be depressed at
the same time, not one letter at a time.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
hearing people accidentally spelling the word deaf as
death!
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Hurricane Katrina has impacted all of us badly. And
Louisiana School for the Deaf, in Baton Rouge, is rising
to the occasion by opening its doors.
The school is housing students, teachers and interpreters
that have lost their homes and have no place to stay. This
group also includes mainstreamed students from New Orleans.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Tony Wallace, who departed
us tragically last week.
A NTID/RIT graduate and hard of hearing, he served as a police
officer in Hoonah, Alaska, a town of 800 people 40 miles away
from Juneau.
He and a fellow police officer was shot to death while making
a police call at a residence.
At NTID/RIT, he was an All-American wrestler. And as police
officer he conducted several classes to teach the police
on how to deal with the deaf.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
An article in the Scientist magazine said that
hard of hearing people uses much more energy
than the deaf. Reason is struggling to catch
every spoken word.
Well, what about deaf lipreaders? Do they use a lot
of energy trying to catch each lipread word?
