-- a reason why a relay center has closed in Virginia
AT&T will close its telecommunications relay center
in Virginia on August 1st. Why? More deaf people
use video relay, smart phones, tablets, texts,
and apps, and they use relay center less and less.
Is it scary or not? Don't know.
-- confusing interpreter bills in Idaho
Idaho legislators need to get their act together
as far as interpreters are concerned. There is
a bill that would not allow the deaf to use
a family member as an interpreter for free; they
would be breaking the law if they did. Also
another bill to set up an interpreter licensing
board - with a $1,000 fee for interpreters
taking a state exam plus another $1,000
for them to get an interpreting license.
Will the $2,000 total fee scare away
interpreters in school systems that pay low
salaries? Probably so.
-- two Gallaudet Schools for the Deaf
Yesterday's DeafDigest said that Senator Pat Roberts
mentioned Gallaudet School for the Deaf (in
Washington, DC). He was talking about playing in a
Congressional basketball game on the Gallaudet
campus. The real Gallaudet School for the Deaf
was in St Louis, Missouri. This school, after
teaching deaf kids for 83 years, closed for
good in 2010.
