- What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Brett Simpson owns his Brett's Place concessions and
snack bar at the Orange County Courthouse in Texas.
Customers love him and he, in turn, loves them and
treats them with respect. He is one of the most beloved
individuals at the Courthouse building. And there was
a recent newspaper story about him and his business.
What about it? Brett is deaf and blind.

When the only deaf person in a workplace loses the
only hearing person that can communicate with him with
sign language and gestures, then it may not be a
happy situation. This is the case that faces Bryan Reed,
who is deaf and a long time employee with the Boonslick
Technical Education Center in Missouri.

- Very Hot News

Kentucky School for the Deaf staged a special event
to honor deaf African-Americans who attended this school
in the past but left before receiving diplomas. They
left because of these Jim Crow laws that prevented them
from receiving quality education that would have led them
to graduation and diplomas. Nearly 80 of them have been
duly honored in this event.

- Sunday July 31st

Thanks to a $75,000 donation by the Walmart Foundation,
nearly 75 students at South Carolina School for the Deaf
and Blind will be enrolled at a job training program
to prepare them for careers in the retail field.

- Monday August 1st

It is not too often that the deaf are direct beneficiaries
of something that the hearing people demand, at least in
New Zealand. The hearing natives that speak Te Reo, a recognized language, asked for English TV subtitles so that
they can learn the language better. Just instantly, the
deaf TV viewers have benefitted from the hearing demand.

- Tuesday August 2nd

Would hearing loss among senior citizens lead to dementia?
This is what more and more hearing health researchers are
saying.

- Wednesday August 3rd

An obvious discrimination took place with the Lambeth Council in south London. Because of downturn in economy, the council
is forced to layoff three people from its staff of eleven
employees. And that two of these three laid off employees are
deaf! The union is screaming and is accusing the council of
discriminating against the deaf.

ADA: INTERPRETERS OR NOT IN DOCTOR'S OFFICES
Many deaf people demand interpreters during
medical appointments, which is required under the
ADA.
But there are also many, many other deaf people
that do not want interpreters. Why?
Two reasons. Many deaf patients want total privacy
and do not want interpreters to know of their medical
problems.
Another reason - deaf patients want notes written
by doctors to bring home and to save for future
review.

LEARNING ASL FAST OR LEARNING ASL SLOW
Always a mystery about learning ASL. Some hearing
people learn very fast and other hearing people
learn very slow.
A perfect example is a husband who works at
Gallaudet. His ASL is slow and fair. His wife
who does not work at Gallaudet and does not work with
the deaf, learned ASL faster and signs much better
than him.
Why? Always a mystery.

OPERATING TWO BUSINESSES IN NICARAGUA FOR A REASON
Mayflower Medical Outreach is a business in Nicaragua.
This business also operates two different businesses -
a computer-related business and a bakery. These two
businesses under Mayflower Medical Outreach operate for
a reason.
It is to fund a school for the deaf! There is no tax
money in Nicaragua to operate schools for the deaf, and
so, this is where the private sector kicks in.

A DEAF-RUN GREETING CARDS COMPANY
We send greeting cards for weddings, birthdays, consolations,
births, retirements, and so on.
While there are many greeting card companies, both big and
small, there is one deaf-owned, deaf-run greeting card company.
It is Smart Alex, owned by Jay Blumenfeld, which is based
in Chicago. Before getting into the greeting card business,
he graduated from RIT with a degree in photography.
DeafDigest is not sure if there are other deaf-run greeting
card companies.

OUR DEAF AUTO RACERS
There was a story in the Washington Post about a hearing
auto racer, who has been racing on all levels since the
age of 4, and has already won over 300 races. And he is
only 21 years old.
And he has a very hard time finding sponsors despite
doing very well this season.
We have about 10-12 deaf racers in all categories - and
almost all of them have sponsorship problems, except for
possibly one racer from Canada.
Ashley Fiolek, who is deaf, and races motorcycles,
is the only deaf person with a big time sponsor - in
Red Bull.
Winning races is one thing; getting sponsors is
another thing. Very hard for hearing racers, let alone
deaf racers.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

The speaker speaks too fast to allow me to catch up
with him

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

THIS AUDIOLOGIST SAID
On a web posting, one audiologist said:

I do not recommend young deaf children wear a hearing aid unless
they are of age and can determine if they can hear better or not
without it. And as for the CI, the children prefer wearing it.

DeafDigest knows that audiologists always agree to disagree
on many hearing-related issues. This is just the viewpoint of
one audiologist, whether you agree or not!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

As students are preparing to head off to school this fall, some of
them may ask, "Is CART right for me?"

For people whose first language is ASL, a sign language interpreter
is probably the best choice for their educational needs.  However,
many people are still not aware of the possibilities of using CART in
an educational setting.  CART may be right for many people in high
school and college.  CART can help people who are deaf or hard of
hearing, and it may also be right for people with certain learning
disabilities and people for whom English is a second language.

Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) is the method of
providing immediate, verbatim, voice-to-text translation, and it is
an approved assistive device under the provisions of the Americans
with Disabilities Act (ADA).

In a university setting, a student can read along on a computer
screen what is being said by the professor and the students in the
class.  They may also be provided a rough draft transcript of the
class proceedings for future reference.

As more students and parents learn about CART services and the
benefits of CART, they may find that CART is right for them.

TO BE DEAF AND TO BE ISOLATED (new series)

There are newspaper stories saying that technology will
render obsolete our sign language  - and that the future
deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their
peers - and that deafness will be completely eradicated
thanks to the CI and genetical engineering.

True or false?

DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example:

- A sole deaf man in a small town is surrounded by his
hearing family members and friends; he has never heard
of relay service, interpreters, ADA rights, etc, etc.
And his only "alerting device" is a family dog that
barks when someone comes at the door. And he is a
college graduate with a good job, not some one that
is ignorant of things in life!

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

Who gets rich when more senior citizens become deaf?
CI manufacturers and CI surgeons? No. It is the hearing
aid dealers. This was the story on a recent posting on
a consumer web site.

.......

The Deaf and the Law:

When a president signs a "deaf bill" then it becomes a new
law, but why would it take a long time for it to take effect?

It is a matter of the involved agency writing up the regulations
that interpret the law. There is a lot of give and take among
those that write the regulations which causes delays. And
even when regulations are finally written, the Deaf Community
may not like the way these are being worded!

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Last week's DeafDigest mentioned that the Americans had to fork over
$18,000 to secure transportation to venues for their athletes at the
Deaflympics in Rome.
Well, the deaf Germans were lucky. They had use of 23 vans from the
Volkswagen plant for transportation at Rome at no cost to them!

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Who is one of United Kingdom's most influential
disabled persons?
According to Disability Now newspaper, Jack
Ashley is, ranking as the nation's second most
influential.
Ashley, late deafened, served as the Member of
Parliament, and fought for the rights and the needs
of the disabled, the deaf included. He is now
retired.
Who is one of USA's most influential deaf
person?
Sorry, DeafDigest isn't getting into this
heated debating fray.

......

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Why are there captioned, but censored-for-the-deaf oldie movies on cable TV? Censored-for-the-deaf means non-censored-for-the-hearing! Is it because we are deaf these
movie people feel we should not be allowed to read these
"bad" words that the hearing people are allowed to hear?

....

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

Someone said:
it is pouring outside

I thought someone said:
it is boring outside

looking at the window, I realized the person was talking
about the heavy rain

if you have lipreading tales, please share these with
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
