-- possibly another Heather Whitestone
Heather Whitestone, who is deaf, won the Miss America 1995
pageant. Could there be a repeat? Elena LaQuatra, who
is deaf, just won the Miss Pennsylvania USA pageant.
She will then compete at the Miss USA pageant. What is
the difference between these two different pagents?
Both compete with each other and the owner of the
Miss USA pageant is..........Donald Trump! Anyway
a picture of Elena LaQuatra is at:

-- Thank you, FCC for saying no
A TV manufacturer wanted to have captions turned on
by voice (voice-activated captions). The FCC said
no. Thank you, FCC. Not every deaf person speaks
very well and the voice-activated remote may not
understand deaf speech!
-- not enough to be "Deaf for a day"
Many organizations host this "Deaf for a
Day" event to teach hearing people what it is
like to be deaf. It is not enough, according
Stephanie Kerschbaum, professor of English
at University of Delaware. She is correct.
Hearing people may play deaf for one day
but the next day they forget all about it!
And the deaf person is still ignored.
