-- stealing from a famous deaf artist
There is a book about Ann Silver, the deaf artist;
it is titled "One Way; Deaf Way." As a young woman,
she lived in New York, and worked with the Museum
of Modern Art's Department of Education division.
She drew a logo of Museum's ASL interpreter. A
few days later she found out that her logo was pirated
with different versions being used by different groups
The interpreter sign hands were the same everywhere.
Even the RID logo looks almost the same but because
the organization did not commission the artwork, there
was no issue with the copyright!
-- Sears forces a deaf person, having no TTY, to use their TTY line
Sears has a TTY line - 1-866-357-2484. Many deaf
people do not have a TTY machine, including DeafDigest
editor. He contacted Sears through a voice relay service
to discuss a matter, and was told to use their TTY number.
He explained that he does not have a TTY machine. The
Sears representative was stubborn, saying TTY line must be
used. Maybe bad Sears representatives may be part of the
reason why Sears is no longer #1 among these big box chains!
-- The British government refuses to apologize for deaf murder
In 1971, 28-year old Eamonn McDevitt, a deaf man, was shot
to death by the British Army. There was a rioting going on
between Ireland and Northern Ireland on the border town.
Eamonn was walking home, few blocks away from the riot,
and the British Army thought he was the enemy. This story
was featured on "Hands On" TV program recently. To this
day the McDevitt family has demanded an official apology
from the Army. Still no apology!
