-- FCC hurting us with "must caption" video rules
FCC votes this Friday to caption internet videos or not.
The truth is that FCC has no power over the internet iself;
the FCC has power only over American broadcasters that put
videos on the internet. If FCC votes to caption the internet
videos then big risk is that broadcasters may stop putting
videos on the internet, just to avoid captioning costs!
-- a long-time ago deaf boxer helped create 10-count rule
Deaf Burke was a famous early 19th century boxer. Before one
big match, the referee was worried about Burke not able to
hear the shouted 10-count rule. If a boxer is knocked to the
floor, he must get up before the end of the 10-count rule or
he is knocked out. Instead, the referee used his arms to show
Burke each count. This is the rule that boxing uses today -
thanks to deaf Burke!
-- sign to voice computers seems to be a fake
We have been reading all about these sign-to-voice
computers that will allow us to communicate with the
hearing. There are some scientists that think it
is a fake. They say it is impossible for a device
to understand everything that is signed. For example,
there are about 5 or 6 different signs for the word
"computer" - also the same thing for "football."
Could a computer catch everything? Not just hands,
but facial expressions and body movements. Possible
or impossible?
