-- The Colors, Numbers and Animals Sign Language
Kevin Bella and Jeff Bibb, both deaf, invented
the Colors, Numbers and Animals Sign Language.
They are assistant football coaches at Mission
San Jose HS in Fremont, CA. The players were
all hearing. Communication was a struggle but
over time, they loved this sign language. They
said it was easier than having to listen to
voice commands. It is a short, coded football
sign language that looks like ASL.
-- never too late at the age of 46
Never too late at the age of 46. Kimi Ross, who is
deaf and is at that age, is a second year veterinary
student at Washington State University's College
of Veterinary Medicine. For years she worked as
special education teacher in Arizona before realizing
care of animals was her first love. It was a change
of life, change of career gamble she took but
with support from her husband.
-- expensive to hire a wrong person to work with deaf
It is expensive to hire an unqualified interpreter
to work with the deaf in Arkansas. DeafDigest has
mentioned in the past that the state hired a person,
whose knowledge of ASL is zero, to serve as an
interpreter. The Deaf Community screamed. The
qualified interpreters also screamed. As a result,
after some nasty battles the unqualified interpreter
is no longer in that position. How much did the battle
cost the state of Arkansas? Approximately $166,000.
It was for settlement, attorney fees, court fees
plus interest. It does not include a lot of time
by Attorney General's staff in working this case!
