-- Too many Dummy Hoy honors?
As we all know, Dummy Hoy is the most famous of these
past deaf major league baseball players. There is a
Dummy Hoy Baseball Tournament for deaf school baseball
teams. There is a Dummy Hoy Field on the Gallaudet
campus. And now this - RIT wants to honor NTID with
a Dummy Hoy Hall of fame plaque installed near the
RIT baseball field. Dummy Hoy Hall of Fame? Not
sure exactly what is this all about.
-- It was difficult for the deaf to get married
In year 1868 in Belgium, a deaf man, employed in a factory,
married a deaf woman, also a factory worker. This marriage
was a success - they had a family life with children in
a house of their own. Historians at a conference of the
International Institute of Social History in the Netherlands
said this deaf marriage was rare. Because of laws, religion,
customs, and attitude, it was almost impossible for a deaf
couple to get married!
-- world's cheapest hearing aid is against state law!
A hearing aid for $8.00 on the internet. A joke? No, these
cheapie hearing aids are being advertised on the eBay, Amazon
and Walmart sites. Florida does not allow it, yet the FDA
allows it. Is the purchase, without services of a licensed
audiologist, worth it? Good question.
