-- Marlee Matlin still in spotlight
Deaf actors come and go. Deaf actresses come and go.
But Marlee Matlin continues to thrive with movies,
TV programs and TV interviews, etc. The latest is
that she will be interviewed by Arsenio Hall on his
Arsenio Hall Show on Friday January 10th. You need
to check your TV schedule for the time of the show.
-- honoring USA's most famous deaf military fighter
Erastus Smith, or much better known as Deaf Smith, is
our most famous deaf military man. He fought in the Texas
Revolution. for the Republic of Texas, and then with
the Texas Rangers during early 19th century. Was he really
deaf? Yes! He was also a spy and a scout. Dr. Steve Baldwin
is a one-man museum on Deaf Smith's life.He worked with
David Pierce, Davideo Productions, on video materials
about Deaf Smith. The material is now at Texas School
for the Deaf, available open to students and the public.
-- Sign language dying in New Zealand?
Is sign language dying in New Zealand? There was a newspaper
story saying that less and less deaf children are using sign
language. Surveys have shown that there was a 25 percent drop
among deaf people using sign language within the past 10
years, especially among deaf teenagers. It is a sad trend
because for years this sign language was suppressed by
schools for the deaf; this language survived thanks to
deaf adults using it in deaf clubs and at deaf events.
(same thing in USA).
