-- a new sign language
There is a new sign language. It is called Smartphone
Sign Language, and it is for the hearing as well as
for the deaf! The new Smartphone can read hand
gestures; users will not have to key in their
commands (change screen, change maps, shooting a
target in a game, etc). So far, the Smartphone
can recognize six commands but some feel it can
be expanded to 20 commands.
-- a wristband for deaf swimmers
There is a new rubber wristband in New Zealand.
It says "hearing impaired" and is to be worn
by deaf swimmers at public pools. This is to
tell lifeguards that the swimmer is deaf. It
was designed by a mother of a deaf son, who
got tired of having to tell lifeguards of
the son's deafness. Will it catch on in USA?
-- a deaf chimp becoming a person
In a 1956 TV comedy, a chimp was inducted
into the Army by mistake. He was quickly given
a discharge before the Pentagon could find out
about it. Anyway, DeafDigest is mentioning this
because the New York appeals court may decide
if a chimp has human rights and therefore,
becoming a person. It involves Kiko, the
deaf chimp that lives in a private residence.
Making this case is animal rights organization.
Warning: this story is not a joke!
