She is deaf. Dedication: DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Benny Maucere who departed us. A long time resident of the Los Angeles area, he was into many things - a successful self-employed contractor with some real Hollywood connections, a successful deaf club basketball coach with several national deaf club championships, a father who motivated his deaf sons - John and Paul into pursuing their own interests in life, and also as a mentor for young deaf individuals that needed direction. And as every person must have a hobby - and Bennie's hobby was pigeon racing! As a sidebar, son John performed the National Anthem in ASL at the most recent Super Bowl! DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Toni S Garza who departed us. She was a well known interpreter in the Abilene, Texas Deaf Community. She was a go-getter in the community, linking the deaf and hearing groups together in social events. Obituary Richard Roehm has passed away at age of 50 due to heart attack. Very difficult to briefly describe him. He was a Devil's Advocate, often disagreeing with the views of deaf leaders at National Association of the Deaf, Gallaudet University and the California Association of the Deaf. He felt that his approach towards deaf problems and deaf issues was better than their approaches. While he pretty much was ostracized by many people in the Deaf Community, there were others that worshipped him. He operated his own agency, the Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center in Southern California. Top stories about the deaf: The Beechwood school district in Ohio had planned to stop funding and managing the mainstreamed program. What has become of it? That was the question popped by a newspaper reader. The answer is that the program continues as is! Unequal treatment between deaf sign language patients and hard of hearing patients in hospitals in Wales was a big issue that was aired on a recent TV expose. Why are people with hearing losses in India not getting the treatment and assistance they deserve? According to a newspaper story, there is a severe shortage of audiologists and speech language pathologists. For the first time users of British Sign Language have been counted in the national British Census. And already there are complaints about the numbers being added up! Liverpool, a city in Great Britain, is broke. It is so bad that the city services for the deaf and hard of hearing is being closed, thus saving the city $165,000 in USA dollars .............................................................. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being asked: do your deaf client understand your sign language? if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series As we have seen, the stenocaptioner's personal dictionary is very important to accurate translation.  Every word must be in the dictionary in order to translate properly.  A captioner may be able to write very accurately and quickly, but if the words have not been entered into the dictionary, it may still be very difficult to follow what is being said. Here is an example of the words being written correctly but not translating properly because they have not been entered into the captioner's dictionary: Then he went on to discuss the core pus el and the cap Larry. This should read: Then he went on to discuss the corpuscle and the capillary. The words "corpuscle" and "capillary" must be entered in the personal dictionary in order for them to translate properly. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF People know that you are deaf, yet some of them ask for your cell phone number to discuss something by voice! (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. Critics have said that Verizon Hawaii has not been providing the Deaf Hawaiians with quality relay service. Will the Deaf Hawaiians be without TTY relay service? No - but the state of Hawaii will have to pay through their nose to continue the TTY relay system since FCC rules are complicated. ......
