DeafDigest - 10 January 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, January 10, 2014 -- was Dennis Rodman drunk while making the deaf promise? Dennis Rodman was a pro basketball great. He also loves alcohol. DeafDigest mentioned that he promised to donate the proceeds of the all-star North Korean game to a deaf charity. Was he drunk at the time he announced the promise? His agent, the sponsoring agency and the North Korean officials knew nothing about it! There seems to be no agency of the deaf in North Korea, but there is a North Korean Federation for the Protection of the Disabled. Guess we will never know the truth!   -- what is the truth about Walt Disney? Walt Disney, the world's most famous cartoonist, built up his company to the empire it is nowadays. Was he a bigot - discriminating against women, against blacks and against Jews? This is what famous actress Meryl Streep is saying right now. Did Disney discriminate against the deaf, too? A Gallaudet graduate found a job, working for Walt Disney during the sixties, few years before Disney passed away. Also, he was the chief fund raiser for the John Tracy Clinic, a program for very young deaf children! So, was he biased or wasn't he biased?   -- ASL to voice & text software Could a deaf person sign in ASL and the software would quickly translate it to either voice and or text for the benefit of hearing people? Tarik Sayeed, not deaf and a Canadian, thinks so. He has been working on this project and he says that there are investors from Silicon Valley wanting to put their money in it. The name of Tarik's start up company is Baby Taxi. Why that name? Good question! DeafDigest suspects it is not really something new, as there have been stories of other such ASL to voice or ASL to text devices.   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest 01/05/14 Blue edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 01/05/14 Gold edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
