-- a dream airplane trip for the deaf
taking a trip by airplane can be stressful -
long lines, long takeoff/landing times,
not understanding the flight attendants,
fear of landing at the wrong airport or
getting on the wrong airplane, etc.
For a group of deaf Israeli basketball
players flying to a deaf tournament in
Taiwai, it was a dream. A sign language
flight attendant stayed with the group
throughout the full trip, communicating
and giving announcements in sign language!
-- a response by the Canadian Hearing Society
the Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) caused
a furor in Ontario. This agency fired their
deaf CEO, and instead of hiring another deaf
CEO, they hired a know-nothing CEO that also
knows nothing about ASL. The Deaf Community
protested. What did the CHS say?
Timothy Andrade, the CHS chair, wrote
in a cruelly brief e-mail to the protesters.
It said:
This is a quick note to thank you for taking
the time to write and share your concerns with
us. As chair, I have the utmost confidence in
the wisdom and decision of our board. Best
wishes for a great summer!
