She founded the Department of Social Work at Gallaudet, and trained many students to become social workers for the deaf. If you bump into a deaf social worker that is a Gallaudet graduate anywhere in USA, the chances are that it is a Polakoff-trained social worker. Thank you, Dorothy for improving the lives of the deaf in need. .. It is official. Scranton State School for the Deaf will not close, but oversight of that school will be assumed by the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD). Agreement was made on a three-year plan to convert the school into a day K-8 program. The school property may be leased to a third party, possibly Marywood University. If the university opts not to lease the land, then WPSD will be the option. In the long run, Scranton SSD will change into a new WPSD satellite program. This is the second such development this year involving schools for the deaf. Two charter programs for the deaf in St Paul, Minnesota merged into a single charter program. We probably will be seeing more such significant developments down the road as schools for the deaf adapt to the changing times. .. Will we be seeing a Sign Language Commission at any time in the near future? This is what Robyn Hunt, New Zealand Human Rights Commission, is proposing. DeafDigest is not sure a Sign Language Commission would work in USA - the deaf population is too diverse - ASL, oral, CI, late deafened, Cued Speech, etc. Such a commission would serve just a portion of the deaf population. .. If legislators in Texas have their way, then there will be a new law titled "Texans with Disabilities Act." It would be similar to our ADA except that the provisions in the state would be much stronger. The enemy is time. Legislators meet every two years and if this bill does not pass this year, the proponents will need to wait two years later. .. Will we, the deaf, get a tax break on hearing aid purchases? A DEAF CHEF AND KSE Deaf cook Siau Lioe, an immigrant of Thailand, is a cook at the Democracy Grille restaurant in Bethesda, Maryland. He became the cook after starting out as a dish washer and the quality of his work in the kitchen has been praised. It did not always start out that way. LOBBYING AND THE DEAF Lobbying for funds is one way for deaf groups to get funding. Lobbying is expensive, and success is not always guaranteed. Take a look at Deer Park, a town of 3,200 people in Illinois. The town budget is $3,500,000 which is approximately equal to the budgets of some of our schools for the deaf and some of our bigger Deaf Service agencies. In an effort to get 1.5 million in funding, the town will be paying $60,000 for lobbying efforts. Not that easy for a deaf group to decide to spend that much on lobbyists. ALWAYS A NEW PHRASE DeafDigest editor was reading some emails when the phrase "non-forensic services" came up in the message. We all know what forensics means by watching all these crime shows on TV. But non-forensics services in the field of deafness? Googling up this phrase gives the impression that it has a lot to do with how professionals deal with issues in a human way, and at all nothing to do with science. At any rate, brace yourself - we will be seeing this phrase become the buzzword in the near future. Since the FCC does not currently have guidelines with regard to the quality of closed captioning, some people are just trying to get by with the cheapest method possible without regard for the quality of the services. If you see TV shows that have poor captioning, you need to let people know. Don't just turn the channel and assume someone else will fix the situation. Please take steps to complain to the FCC, the television station, and the producers of the show. Also, if you see shows that have excellent captioning, it would be good to let people know that they're doing a good job. Crash course on the Digital Television Transition This is a continuation of our weekly educational column on addressing concerns about the analog TV shutoff and the final transition to digital TV which is scheduled to occur on or before June 12, 2009. Question this week: I live in a small town in the mountains. I learned that my TV station will not go digital by the June 12 deadline. I thought all TV stations had to be digital by that date. What's going on? Answer: Only "full-power" TV stations have to be digital by June 12. It does not apply to "low-power" TV stations which are exempt from the rule. There are over 2,100 low-power TV stations that operate in mountainous areas and in small towns like yours. These stations mostly serve areas that are unable to get over-the-air full-power signals because they are too far away from the full-power TV station to receive the signal. The low-power TV station helps bring that signal to the area affected by this problem. The FCC has not yet set a deadline for these TV stations so they will continue to broadcast in analog. The right candidate should have experience providing supportive services to families or to individuals with emotional or behavioral disturbance, preferably as a caregiver. ASL fluency and bicultural competency are required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Must be able to work collaboratively with a team and posses effective interpersonal and communication skills. Time flexibility and some availability during evening/weekend hours is required as is a valid Massachusetts drivers license.
