- What the stories are saying about the deaf?
A strong tradition in Armenia is carpet-weaving. They make some of the world's best carpets. In the town of Echmiadzin, one of the women carpet weavers is Narine Badalian. She is deaf. She said:
I love weaving carpets, the process takes away me somewhere and I become oblivious to everything and think only of beautiful things
We have a number of deaf personal trainers, those that goad their hearing clients into fine physical shape. There is one in United Kingdom - Michael Easton, but there is a difference. He is complaining that he is unable to attract hearing clients because of his deafness. It did not matter that he has a diploma and a personal trainer certificate and qualifications in nutrition and in some sports, hearing clients won't come to him!
- Very Hot News
Armenia again, but for a different reason!
Going on right now is the European Deaf Wrestling Championships at Yerevan, Armenia. A group of Turkish wrestlers was denied entry into Armenia for two days because of visa issues. When officials at the Turkish Foreign Ministry heard about it, they quickly had the issue resolved with the Armenian government officials. The Turkish wrestlers are now at the tournament.
- Thursday October 6th
Conditions in prisons everywhere in the world are always bad - but the one at Isle of Man stands out for one reason. A deaf prisoner missed his meal - because no one told him of the meal call!
- Friday October 7th
The Employment Appeal Tribunal in United Kingdom has an important case coming up - to decide if the British government discriminated against Jean Cordell, a deaf woman who was qualified for a diplomatic mission but denied her the job. The reason was high costs of providing her with interpreters. This is probably her last legal resort because she has been defeated in each step in the due process system.
- Saturday October 8th
The committee voted 4-1 to redistrict 6th Congressional District, taking Carroll County and much of Frederick County out of it. Not too happy about it is Howard Gorrell. He is deaf and he is planning to file a lawsuit. The newspaper story said:
He attended all 12 of the redistricting committee's hearings, is already planning to file suit over the map. "As a pro se litigant, I am drafting a complaint, which be filed with the District of Maryland of the United States District Court, unless the Governor will make major changes for compactness," Gorrell said in an e-mail.
Gorrell, who has years of experience with hearing political matters, said it is not about the hearing, but about the deaf people that may be badly impacted by the redistricting. Maryland School for the Deaf is located right in Frederick County. And a large deaf community exists in Frederick County. Many Gallaudet employees commute to their homes in the county.
.....
Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:
Ádám Kósa, a deaf member of the European Parliament, is giving a speech on disability-related laws in Japan. He hopes this will help Japanese politicians understand and appreciate the needs of the deaf everywhere.

A DEAF RESTAURANT OWNER CANCELED HIS TTY LINE Years ago a deaf man owned a big restaurant. He put in a TTY line for the benefit of his deaf customers that wanted to make reservations or to order take out food. After using it for some time he stopped the TTY line. Why? Because his hearing employees did not know how to use it and the deaf owner was too busy every day with his restaurant business.

A DEAF PIGEON? Not the bird, but a hearing social/cultural club in United Kingdom that they call "Deaf Pigeon." Why Deaf Pigeon? Do not know, but the British people tend to apply the word Deaf as a name of something - like a band or a club or a restaurant, etc! Are they respecting or mocking the deaf?
THE GREEN ON THE KENDALL GREEN Kendall Green is where Gallaudet University is located - and there is a great twist to it. The old tennis courts on the campus is no more. In its place is a vegetable garden, which grows produce for the food served at the Gallaudet cafeteria. And Gallaudet is going back to its old roots. The football field years ago before the name changed to Hotchkiss Stadium, was named Garlic Field - for obvious reasons. And there was the Hay Barn, again for obvious reasons before it was razed years ago.
