-- governor candidates comment about TV captions
Three candidates (Anthony Brown, Boyd Rutherford and
Shawn Quinn) are hoping to be the next governor of
Maryland. They were asked this question:
why no captions in your political ads?
Said Brown:
Costly, and I feel I failed the deaf
Said Rutherford:
good question; I will have my committee discuss this
Said Quinn:
I have no money in my campaign funds to pay for captions
-- most successful deaf lifeguard's 16 near-failures
The most successful deaf lifeguard was Leroy Colombo
who protected swimmers from the waves on the beaches
of Galveston, Texas. He saved 907 swimmers from
drowning in a career that spanned 45 years (1923-
1968). He had 16 near-failures. What were these
failures? He was a very strong swimmer and won
many long distance swimming races - but he
nearly drowned 16 times while rushing out to
rescue these swimmers! The waves off the Galveston
beaches overwhelmed him.
-- talking to Aiko Chihira
Can we chat with Aiko Chihira? Possibly not in
ASL but possibly in Japanese Sign Language (JSL).
Aiko is a robot, but looks like a human being.
It was demonstrated at a high tech Japanese
expo this week by Toshiba. Right now his
"knowledge" of JSL is limited, but with increased
programming, the vocabulary will include more
signs. Why not ASL? It can, but not yet right now.
