-- a big deaf honor in Ivy League
We have had a number of deaf students in Ivy League
colleges (Harvard, Princeton, Yale, etc). Some of them
have played sports. Brown University, which is part of
the Ivy League group, made an announcement yesterday
of two football captains for this 2014 season. One of
them is Dan Giovacchini. He is deaf! According to a
source, he is the second deaf athlete to captain a
sport in the Ivy League. The first one was a Princetonian.
You can see two pictures of him at:

-- Australia, an advanced nation, sinks to a new low
Australia is right up there with USA, Canada, England,
France, etc when it comes to standard of living,
quality of life, advanced technology, etc. Yet, Australia
has sunk to a new low. The Children's Hospital at Westmead
would not allow deaf parents to take home their 3-month
old baby. Why? Because of parents' deafness. This is
shocking. Already disability rights groups are fighting
the hospital on behalf of the deaf parents and they're
asking the government to intervene.
-- interpreters for deaf prisoners
For years deaf prisoners have complained of bad interpreting
or no interpreters to help them communicate. Well, in
Oregon, there are interpreters that help these deaf prisoners.
The problem is that these interpreters are friendly fellow
prisoners that happen to know ASL. Yes, they are not
RID-certified. This has become a big issue right now.
