-- embarrassed headquarters fires anti-deaf new boss
The new owner of the Auntie Anne's pretzels in
Dickson, TN, immediately fired the deaf employee,
telling her:
a deaf employee was incapable of working in the store
Her supervisor happened to be her hearing sister,
who quickly protested the firing. This story went
viral, thus embarrassing the corporate headquarters.
The corporate president quickly fired the new hearing
owner and at the same time, rehired both women. This
turn of events has an interesting twist - because it
is located inside Walmart, which has a great
reputation for hiring the deaf! A picture is at:

-- ASL or PSL
Is PSL (Philadelphia Sign Language) considered ASL,
with its own dialects and accents? DeafDigest
editor, many years ago, watched a group of deaf
people of Philadelphia sign to each other in PSL
and could not understand it. Anyway University
of Pennsylvania, working with Gallaudet linguists,
is staging a public demonstration of what PSL is
all about! Remember yestereday DeafDigest mentioned
a dying language - the Hawaiian Sign Language.
-- faking deafness to get big government contracts
In USA, we have this 8A section of these SBA
set-asides where deaf-certified business owners
could win favorable government contracts for
ten years. Anywway in India, a hearing businessman
was able to get his wife a deafness certificate
as signed by a group of ENT doctors at a hospital
audiology center. The husband says wife is deaf;
the government suspects the wife of faking her
deafness in order to win that big government
contract. This case is in the courts.
