Top stories about the deaf:
A group of actors researched past Broadway plays and
discovered that producers discriminate heavily
against deaf and disabled actors, an accusation
that the theatrical industry has denied.
Israeli activists do not quickly file discrimination
lawsuits; instead they send warning letters
through law offices, with threat of lawsuits if
deaf discrimination problem is not fixed. These
activists say it works and is better than wasting
time in the court rooms!
Officials with the Irish Prison Service admitted
they have lost count of deaf inmates in the
national prison system.
A deaf person has complained that when captioning
mistakes are made, the corrections are made at
just one letter at a time. If the mistake is
made at the beginning of the line, the
correction goes backwards keystroke by keystroke
until the correction is made. By the time there is a correction, the next dialogue
is lost!
Beth James, director, Jackson Center for Independent Living (Tennessee) said:
I don't think people realize how many people are deaf in our community

TO ACCEPT HEARING PEOPLE OR TO AVOID THEM
Many deaf people hate it when hearing people
come to them, trying to get into a conversation.
This is why many deaf people walk away when
hearing people come to them. Too much hassle in
trying to lipread or to write notes or to use
gestures.
But - we may never know? You walk away from
a hearing person that could have been a great
contact for you - such as a better job offer!
Or maybe it is a scout for a movie, looking
for a perfect character for a new movie!

Lip reading tale
A hearing chef and a deaf friend were talking
about vegetables
The deaf person thought the hearing chef said:
It must be jobbed
The hearing chef actually said:
It must be chopped

FAKE PERFECT SPEECH
It is annoying for a deaf person that cannot
speak well.
He can pronounce just one word perfectly.
Hearing people understand him saying that one
word - and they think he has perfect speech!
Very annoying and frustrating!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Because realtime captioners do not use the QWERTY keyboard, the types of errors that they make are different than someone who is typing on a computer keyboard. Some people may think that captioners don't know the difference between simple words.
If a stenocaptioner strokes the steno for "rain" instead of "rein," it is not because the captioner does not know the difference between those two words. It may just be that the captioner stroked the wrong stroke on the steno keyboard.
Homophones are difficult for many captioners because they are words that sound the same but are spelled differently. Captioners are trained to write phonetically, so when two words sound the same, the captioner has to devise a system to distinguish between the two words.
One of the solutions is to add an asterisk to the steno so that the strokes will be different. But now the captioner has to remember which stroke gets the asterisk: Do I add the asterisk to "guild" or "gild"?
If you ever see a sentence captioned something like, "The Army kernel went to visit the sergeant," remember that the words "colonel" and "kernel" sound the same, and the captioner is writing phonetically. The captioner probably knows the difference between those words, but he or she just didn't write the steno to get it to translate properly.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
In the backyard of the American School for the
Deaf (ASD), West Hartford, CT, something strange
seemed to be going on, according to clueless
neighbors.
Three houses, sitting next to each other on
Fern Street, suddenly had "For Sale" signs
propped up in front.
Was there a neighborhood feud that involved
these three households? Or was is it something
spooky, despite Halloween being gone for a month
and half?
Nope. These three houses were owned by ASD
for years for occupancy by some staff members.
Times have changed and school priorities have
changed, hence these 3 surprise "For Sale" signs.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Did NFL ever have a head coach that was deaf? Sort of. It
was mentioned in a newspaper story that Blanton Collier, who
coached Cleveland Browns from 1963 to 1970, had to leave
the coaching profession because of his deafness. He led the
team to a NFL championship in 1964. At that time there
was no Super Bowl. He passed away in 1983.
