Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Judy Sheerer,
a past Ohio legislator, who was not deaf. As
the legislator, she sponsored bills to establish
TTY stations at legislative offices. She wanted
the deaf to reach the legislators to discuss
issues.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Allen
Sussman, a long time Gallaudet psychologist,
that departed us. He had been in ill health
for quite some time.
This just in -
With the administration of Gallaudet's new president
Bobbi Cordano, just few days old, a top ranking
official has resigned. Ed Bosso, Vice President of the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center (which oversees MSSD and KDES), will be leaving Gallaudet in
middle of next month. He has accepted a new position as
Executive Director of Educational Programs/Superintendent of Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA.
Top stories about the deaf:
There was a big editorial in United Kingdom about
many deaf people not able to find employment. The
editorial said that it has cost the nation a fortune
not to hire the deaf and give them opportunities.
Being planned in Wakayama-shi, western Japan is
a new residential facility for deaf senior citizens.
It would be the 10th such facility for the deaf in
Japan.
Stethoscope and the deaf physician? Well, many
people believe the deaf cannot become physicians
only because they can't hear the heart beats from
the stethoscope. Well, technology has created
electronic stethoscopes. And there was a recent
newspaper story saying that stethoscopes are
becoming obsolete because of computers that can
"hear" the heart beats!
The D.C. Public Library is celebrating the
King Week and Black History Month 2016. A main
exhibit is the ""Social Justice Sneakers: Walk in Someone Else's Shoes." These sneakers (48
pairs) have been designed by Gallaudet students
as part of their ethics class.
A deaf employee filed a lawsuit against a non-profit
agency, serving the disabled, on basis of job
discrimination - and lost. Reason was lack of
documentation alleging such incidents.

DEAF LOOKING FOR JOBS
In the past, deaf clubs were very important
for one reason - club members helped their
deaf friends find jobs.
Deaf clubs are dying today. One less
opportunity for the deaf to find jobs.
This is sad.

NETFLIX: CLOSED CAPTIONS VS SUBTITLES
Many deaf people love to watch movies
on Netflix. They must make sure they are
not missing any conversations. You see
the actor talk, but no captions show up.
You need to check the captions box -
sometimes closed captions are turned off,
but subtitles turned on - or the other
way around.
Just have to be careful on both
options.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
complained a director of an agency serving the deaf:
Sometimes I think clients think we are an Interpreter
Dispatch, just like a Taxi Dispatch. Picture a line-up of
Interpreters, waiting for a call to be dispatched, just
like taxis. It would be a funny cartoon.
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Some people think that all broadcast captioners and CART captioners use the same "code" when they write on their steno machines. However, that is not true. Every captioner writes somewhat differently.
Even though there are some similarities to all styles of writing on a steno machine, each captioner modifies his or her own steno theory. There are a number of steno theories that have been taught by the different court reporting/captioning schools.
As the captioner is taught steno theory, he or she is taught the basic location of the keys on the keyboard and what combinations of letters to use to make other letters. For example, in most steno theories, the letters "TPH" when depressed with the left hand will be used to represent the sound of the letter "N" at the beginning of a word.
After the captioner learns the basic theory, he or she will continue to tweak their writing throughout their entire career. Even someone who has been in the business for many years will find new ways to write certain sounds, words, or phrases.
You can find forums on the Internet where court reporters and captioners share information about how they write, and new ideas and concepts can be incorporated in all steno theories.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
hearing people that "over-mouth" their words, thinking
it would help the deaf to lipread them better!
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

facilities to always turn on TV captions, the

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
If we are saying that Rick Macomber, a professional
standardbred driver, is a million-dollar driver, then
it is not an exaggeration.
He closed out the 2005 standardbred racing season
with purse winnings of $1,205,159, with 156 wins,
154 seconds and 147 thirds in 1275 races.
If one also says that Gallaudet University does not
produce professional athletes, then that comment
is wrong because making money as a standardbred driver
makes the person a pro.
editor's note: Rick is still actively competing
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Public health authorities in China have been warning everyone
that inappropriate use of the antibiotic streptomycin have
led to deafness in over a million children. Many Chinese
have a supply of this drug and administer these to the
children without advice of their doctors!
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Many people assume that real time captioners
know everything about the subject, including
vocabulary, that they are captioning.
It is not true. No one knows everything about
subjects they are not familiar with!
