- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Larry Newman,
Riverside, CA, who departed us. A legendary teacher
at California School for the Deaf for so many
years, he was the Teacher of the Year in the
state of California. And he was also a leader
with several national deaf organizations, including
the NAD. And with the NAD, he served as the president,
successfully steering this organization through one of its most troubled financial moments. He also was an accomplished writer and author, with so many articles to his credit.

Why was he so beloved by everyone, everywhere? Said an acquaintance:

He was very patient and kept things on an even keel
when things got bad

Thank you very much for serving us so admirably
over the years

- What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Is it possible to treat Usher syndrome in some
deaf people? A group of researchers from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany is saying it
may be possible. They are working on a new type
of treatment, saying Usher is caused by problems
with molecular processes and mechanisms.

Why do government programs to help the deaf and the
disabled fail in Nigeria? The reason is that these
government leaders establish programs - without asking the deaf and the disabled or advice and
input. An example is establishing a training class
for the deaf - but without hiring interpreters,
and so on!

- Very Hot News

Are we having summer Deaflympics in 2013? Athens, Greece was supposed to host this event, but the Greek government, very broke, could not provide the funds. Hopefully a host city, possibly London or Moscow, will surface at the "last
minute" to host the 2013 Deaflympics. Keep in mind our most recent winter Deaflympics was cancelled.

- Sunday July 3rd

Sir Harry Kroto, not deaf, is a British Nobel Prize winner in
Chemistry. He said:

a deaf person can never understand the beauty of a violin
concerto

Lucas Brouwers, a blog writer with the Scientific American
blogs, disagreed, saying that Kroto was wrong.

A discussion ensured on that blog

- Monday July 4th

Andrea Sonnier, a deaf woman, finished runner up at the
Miss Louisiana pageant. She won in one category - the
Lifestyle/Fitness award.

- Tuesday July 5th

Only two facilities in the nation are able to accommodate
the residential needs of the deaf-blind. And one of them -
the New England Homes for the Deaf - is no longer accepting
new deaf-blind residents. Budgetary concerns is the reason.
Needless to say, the New England Deaf Community is very upset
about the whole thing. Keep in mind only a few years back, a
nasty chemical explosion in the neighborhood, forced the evacuation of the Home residents.

- Wednesday July 6th

A deaf man in China was away from his apartment for ten years and came back. He was shocked to find himself declared dead by his daughter. And she also sold his apartment. The deaf man then
filed a lawsuit and won. The court ordered the daughter to pay back the entire proceeds of the apartment sale.

It was in 2006 when New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) was formally
recognized by the government. And five years later, the nation has

DEAF MAN INTRODUCED TO "ORAL" DEAF WOMAN
This is a true story. It happened many years ago when
it was not "polite" for the deaf to use sign language
in public.
A deaf man, using ASL, was introduced to a deaf woman
who seemed to be "oral."
The man liked the woman very much, but the deaf woman
"could not sign" and it forced the ASL deaf man to
communicate in an oral way.
This was going on for about an half hour until the
deaf man realized the deaf woman was skilled with ASL.
He asked her why was she using oral language while
she could use ASL. She said it was not polite and also
embarrassing to sign in public. He told her to forget
about embarrassment and to sign ASL with him.
She did - and they fell in love and got married.
They have been happily married for many years with
children.

EVERY DAY WE KNOW IT
Every day do hearing people know that they are hearing?
No. They do same things every day without thinking about
themselves as a hearing person.
It is different with us as deaf individuals. We know
every day that we are deaf. We wake up in the morning
with special wake-up clocks. We drive cars and use our eyes
to watch for traffic. We order coffee at Starbucks by pointing
at the wall menu. We go to work and gesture with hearing
employees, etc, etc.
We know we are deaf every day. Hearing people don't think
about themselves as hearing every day.

AN OVERLOOKED REASON FOR OPPOSITION TO PARALYMPICS
We, the deaf in USA, do not want to participate in
the Paralympics, for one simple reason - that we
are able-bodied, as opposed to Paralympics participants.
There is another reason, which was pointed out to
DeafDigest editor by a deaf sports official.
There are more sporting events for us in the
Deaflympics whereas the sporting events in the
Paralympics is limited.
Said the deaf sports official:

Most people are not aware of the limit in events

POSSIBLE DEATH OF DEAF MATH
What is Deaf Math? It is the Pi. We all know the
Pi equals 3.14159265358979. And why is it called
Deaf Math?
The Pi is called the surd. And surd means deaf!
And why is there a possible death?
Mathematicians for years have been saying the Pi
is all wrong, and should not be part of math!

DEAF EMPLOYMENT AT CEBU CITY
Cebu City, with two million people, is the second largest
city in the Philippines.
What does Leonilo Umayan, director, Persons with Disability Affairs Office, have to say about the employment situation?
He said:

Cebu City is the best place to stay, but it's not friendly to PWDs

PWDs means caring for persons with disabilities. And of all these
businesses located in Cebu City, only one, the Mabolo Printing Press,
would hire the deaf.
This company has nearly deaf employees on its payroll.

THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT FAILS THE DEAF!
We have The Affordable Care Act, or better known as the
Health Care Reform law. The Department of Health and Human Services,
responsible for implementing this law, is not doing its job
very well - according to Deaf Care activists.
This agency has been criticized for lumping all types of
deafness into just one category, instead of separating them
into - deaf at birth, ASL users, late deafened, etc, etc.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

said an interpreter -

when a deaf client arrives at the last minute, I have no clue
how he wants the dialogue to be interpreted - word for word
or to summarize what was being said

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

"Who are you working for?"

This is a question many CART providers are asked

The people who use CART providers' services are generally not the
people who actually pay for those services, so there may be a
difference when a CART provider uses the terms "client" or "consumer"
or "user."

The client is usually the person or organization who will be paying
for the CART provider's services.  Often this is the entity hosting
the event or the school or university in an educational setting.

The consumer is the person who is actually using the services of the
CART provider.  This is often a person who is deaf or hard of
hearing, or it may be a person for whom English is a second language.

Although some CART providers are employees of organizations, most
CART providers work as independent contractors for a number of
different clients.

TO HEAR BUT TO MIS-HEAR, TOO!

There are hard of hearing people that can follow voice
communications, but do struggle at times. An example is:

I went into Peets coffee and the clerk started talking to me (oh no);
I tried and tried to understand him.

"Wecoseerlietoday"  he said again and again. "Finally I got it. "Oh! You're closing early? You need me to leave right now? " I
asked. And "Okay I'll be out of here in just one minute!"

But it was wrong. He kept repeating himself. Exasperated I made my daughter help with sign language.

"Mom! He is saying the name of the kind of coffee, Waycozeere coffee!

Sigh..... Why do the hearing people waste our energy on  such unimportant
things!

deaf children in a mainstreamed program)

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

American money. Euro money. And now this one - Deaf money!
Whats' that? Play money for the deaf - sort of - yes and no.
Worried European Commission leaders unsure if Europeans would
be able to distinguish their nation's currency from the new Euro currency, have been embarking on an educational program.
For the deaf, they will be distributed with a set of fake Euro notes to help them learn the new currency system.
Are these Commission leaders implying that we, the deaf, are
incapable of learning the new currency system?
We, the deaf, need real Euro money, not these Deaf money!

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Mark Humphrys, not deaf, a professor of computer
science at Dublin City University in Ireland, said
that odds are "virtually" 100 percent that
all Earthlings can claim royal blood within their
own vast genealogical lineages.
This is interesting because there has been
a higher than normal incidence of deafness among
members of the European royal families.
Should we try to connect these two dots?

......

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Last week's DeafDigest mentioned a "Deaf Wine Bar"
in Ohio and wondered why that name if there was no
connection to the deaf or of deafness.

It was learned the owner wanted to honor his own

To honor a deaf dog is great but to name a bar after
him may be quite misleading?
