-- a Coda remembers Matt Hamill
What many people do not know is that just-retired deaf
Ultimate Fighter Matt Hamill was a freshman member of the
Purdue University wrestling team. That was before he
transferred to NTID and became a wrestling champion.
At that time Purdue had a Coda member of the baseball
team. The wrestling coach asked the Coda baseball player
to serve as Matt's ASL interpreter. It was a big joke!
Matt knew no ASL at that time! Now we see Matt as a
polished, role model spokesperson, fluent in ASL,
making numerous public appearances at Deaf Events.
Yes, Matt has grown so much over these years.
-- a Deaf World Pageant with a strange name
Today a newspaper carried a story of a deaf participant
in a Deaf Pageant coming up next week in Prague, Czech
Republic. This story said the name of the Deaf Pageant
is Miss World Deaf and Dumb Pageant. Sigh!
-- worst Deaf Ad
We are seeing more and more ads that involve the deaf
as models or as actors. What is the Worst Deaf Ad?
According to an advertising industry writer, the
worst ad was the Apple ad that used a deaf woman
using iPad tablet and traveling on a "musical
adventure" with these sounds. The writer said the
ad was not realistic and is not what deaf people
usually do with their iPads!
