Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Ellen O'Hara-Hanna,
that departed us. She was a teacher at the Utah Schools for the Deaf Blind at Jean Massieu School. Not just
standing alone as an outstanding teacher, she was also
a deaf community/civic leader, always pushing for
right and needs of the deaf.
Top stories about the deaf:
It may be ghastly but there was a story at a
funeral home in Alton, Illinois about a mummy
that was hung in a closet for 80 years. It
was William Lee, a deaf man who spent years as
a petty criminal, always getting into trouble
with the law, but pretty much a home town
legend.
Gene therapy helping fix deafness? This is
what Richard Smith, MD, director of the Molecular Otolaryngology Research Laboratories (MORL) at the University of Iowa is saying. He was
written up in a newspaper story.
A cochlear implant woman made this interesting comment
- Not all deaf people want to be fixed! Was she
criticizing deaf people's resistance to a CI?
In a newspaper story, she was neutral with her
CI views, not 100 percent supporting cI, not
100 percent criticizing CI.
Seth Tetteh-Ocloo, a deaf Ghanian man, graduated
from Gallaudet in 1965 with a perfect 4.0 GPA
and made Deaf Education his career mission, both
in USA and in Ghana. His legacy has been honored
this week when Access Women Network has profiled
the Tetteh Ocloo State School in Ashaiman, Ghana.
The Outreach Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing
in Wyoming is threatened with a 40 percent state
budget cut. The Deaf Community is fighting back.

HEARING PEOPLE SELDOM ASK DEAF THIS QUESTION
A hearing person comes to a deaf person, but
often asks this question:
Can you lipread?
He never asks - what do you prefer - lipreading
or texting or notewriting or interpreter? It is
always - can you lipread?
It is very frustrating.

DEAF DISCRIMINATING AGAINST DEAF
Deaf people discriminate against other deaf people?
We are not talking about ASL, oral, hard of hearing
that fight each other.
We are talking about almost-hearing people that
discriminate against the deaf. Almost-hearing? Yes,
many hearing people have hearing losses (age,
noise, etc). Instead of understanding the real
deaf, they discriminate against the deaf!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Computer-aided transcription (CAT) continued to gain popularity with court reporters in the 1980s and 1990s, and court reporters continued to find that the old method of writing on their steno machines totally phonetically would not always produce the translation they desired.
One of the things that reporters became aware of was what are called word boundary problems.
For example, if the prefix "en" and the suffix "en" are written the same on the steno machine because they sound the same phonetically, the computer may attach them to the wrong word, and erroneous translations may occur.
A reporter might try to write the following sentence.
"They will strengthen light enforcement of that policy."
The CAT program could translate it as: "They will strength enlighten forcement of that policy."

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
How much money has been allocated for
telecommunications relay services everywhere in USA?
It costs $419,724,291 right down to the very
penny.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Why do government programs to help the deaf and the
disabled fail in Nigeria? The reason is that these
government leaders establish programs - without
asking the deaf and the disabled or advice and
input. An example is establishing a training class
for the deaf - but without hiring interpreters,
and so on!
