DeafDigest - 11 March 2015

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, March 11, 2015   -- unusual restaurant table used by the deaf Deaf Table in any restaurant? Yes, deaf people face each o ther and the lights are bright. At the AYZA Wine & Chocolate Bar in Manhattan, there is an unusual table. One half of the table is outside; the other half is inside. Both diners face each other through the window, chatting on their cell phones. One time two deaf people came in, and they used ASL through the window. This is the Deaf Table! It is a temporary arrangement as the tables will be taken down soon.   -- this strange feud between deaf residents and hearing resident A feud between deaf husband and wife residents and their hearing condo neighbor was bad and strange. It involved condo association, police and attorneys. Why? The hearing neighbor has a fear of the deaf and was scared by these "deaf voices" and "deaf gestures" thinking they were going to hurt him. Why strange? The hearing man is a retired secret service agent and he protected the US presidents. He also was a former security chief of a NFL team! Not afraid of bad people but afraid of the deaf? So strange!   -- reason for not casting a deaf actress in a deaf role Michael Ojeda, in making the "Avenged" film, offered the deaf role to a deaf actress and was turned down! He could have looked for another deaf actress, but decided against it and cast a hearing actress for this deaf role. Why? He said the actress must hear to follow the action during the filming. He felt a deaf actress would not work too well with the camera people with these action scenes. Huh! We have many skilled deaf actors - Marlee Matlin, Bernard Bragg, Lou Ferrigno, and many others - and they have played all kinds of movie roles.
