DeafDigest - 11 November 2013

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, November 11, 2013   -- Deaf person visiting Florida from Alaska Florida School for the Deaf and Blind had a successful Deaf Alumni weekend. Over 1,000 FSDB alumni members attended this event. There waa a rumor, written up in a newspaper story, that a FSDB alumnus, now living in Alaska, flew down to St Augustine to attend this grand event - a big football game and other events on the campus. That person probably did not see over 1,000 deaf people in Alaska, but yes, in Florida!   -- A past Miss America winner was deaf and it was after  Whitestone! Way back in 1995, we were thrilled that Heather Whitestone, a deaf woman, won the Miss America Pageant. While she was heavily promoted as a supporter of the oral method of education, she was a fluent ASL signer; it was hidden from the deaf community. Anyway, she was not the only deaf winner of the Miss America pageant. The 2nd deaf winner was Deidre Downs who won the 2005 Miss America. Both women, incidentally were from Alabama. What has become of Deidre? She is a Resident physician in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Medical Center. DeafDigest doesn't think she knows ASL.   -- One hour of school per day for a deaf child! Liam Cunneen is a 6-year old deaf boy from Cork, Ireland, whose parents are also deaf. He can only attend school for just one hour per day! Why? Because there are no teachers of the deaf at the school that he attends. The mother is very upset and there was a newspaper story, criticizing the school for not doing enough to try to find a teacher for him!   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest 11/10/13 Blue edition at: http://35.182.75.222/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 11/10/13 Gold edition at: http://35.182.75.222/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
