DeafDigest - 12 April 2013

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, April 12, 2013 -- a million dollar deaf athlete The Bloomberg Businessweek magazine ran a story on a million-dollar athlete. He is the best in his sport. He has many sponsorship deals. He is the top earning athlete in his sport. He was a college All-American in his sport. He is a partner in an investment firm. His twitter has 40,000 followers and his Facebook has 65,000 likes. Who is that athlete and what is the sport? It is Paul Rabil and he plays pro lacrosse. He was born with a hearing problem. He tried to hide it for many years. But few years ago he revealed his deafness. He became the national spokesperson with the National Cued Speech Association. Not sure if he still is the spokesperson.   -- a Deaf Crisis in Rochester, NY There is no such a thing as a Perfect Deaf Community! All deaf communities have their problems and issues, and the Rochester Deaf Community is no exception (same as with the Metro Washington Deaf Community). A newspaper story about the Rochester Deaf Community said this community suffers from a Deaf Brain Drain. Young and bright deaf people grow up in the area, attend NTID and move out after they graduate. Keep in mind other Deaf Communities profit from Rochester's loss, so it comes out even.     -- a late-deafened police officer Many police officers quit when they lose their hearing, afraid they could not perform well in police work. Joseph Molinari, the Nashua, New Hampshire police officer started to lose his hearing as a young man. He was afraid to continue with his career, but did not give up and started using hearing aids. He has been using these aids for 10 years, allowing him to function normally in all phases of police work. He may not be the only late-deafened police officer around; there may be others but he was the rare officer to come forward with his hearing loss. His police rank is Sergeant.   04/07/13 Blue edition at: http://35.182.75.222/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 04/07/13 Gold edition at: http://35.182.75.222/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
