DeafDigest - 12 January 2016

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, January 12, 2016 -- a vest that makes us sad This picture is self-explanatory, and so sad. See the picture at: http://35.182.75.222/a-sad-vest/   -- accepting a deaf student and kicking her out There is a new lawsuit. A deaf woman was accepted to a radiologic technology program at Keiser University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When the university officials realized she was deaf, she was quickly kicked out. It didn't matter that her employer, Bay Pines Veterans Administration Hospital, was paying for her additional training. Lawsuit? Very certainly so!     -- a new type of mental health assistance for the deaf When a deaf person needs mental health services, it is not a pleasant situation. Either there is a shortage of deaf or ASL-fluent mental health professionals or hearing mental health professionals that know no ASL and depend on interpreters. In three states there is a new approach - Certified Peer Specialists program. Selected deaf individuals become peer specialists and help deaf clients with their counseling needs. The states with this such a program are Minnesota, South Carolina, and Massachusetts. Hopefully this will grow with more states getting involved.     Latest deaf jobs: http://deafdigest.com/category/jobs/ or click on "jobs" past Mid-Week & morning editions: http://deafdigest.com/category/mid-week-news/ 01/10/16 Blue and Gold editions at: http://deafdigest.com/newsletters/
