She became deaf few years ago. She was taking Avastin, a medicine prescribed by her doctor for treatment of neurofibromatosis type 2. Avastin did the job, but not in the manner that is expected - to treat tumors in her brain. Instead, it restored her hearing in one ear! Medical authorities are trying to figure out why her hearing came back. .. It is official. Helene Jarmer, who is deaf, was officially sworn to serve as Austria's parliamentary deputy on behalf of the Green party. When not busy with politics, she teaches art and mathematics. .. Timothy Kelly is the new superintendent at St Mary's School for the Deaf, Buffalo, NY. He served as the interim superintendent for nearly a year before being elevated to the permanent position. .. We have had high profile deaf and hard of hearing individuals serve as spokespersons for respective organizations or agencies serving the deaf. Examples were famous actress Nanette Fabray, during the seventies, and in recent years - Marlee Matlin, Heather Whitestone-McCallum, among others. These people were household names where recognition and identity were instant. But Paul Rabil? Hard-core lacrosse fans know who he is - a former Johns Hopkins University star and now playing professionally with the Boston Cannons in the pro lacrosse league. He is the spokesperson for the National Cued Speech Association. Not too many people, outside of the close-knit lacrosse community, knew he had a lifelong hearing loss. .. Up for a vote in the Senate this week is the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act. This bill extends current hate crime laws to include bias against the disabled, the deaf included. Not sure if calling the deaf, a deaf-mute or a deaf-dumb is considered bias? DeafDigest hopes deaf-mute and deaf-dumb is bias, and subject to punishment as prescribed by the law! ................................................................ ................................................................ It is still the best basketball movie in Hollywood history. The character, Jimmy Chitwood, who scored the last second basket to help his high school win the state championship, was supposed to be deaf. It was part of the script. And in fact, there was a brief conversation among the actors during the filming that mentioned Chitwood's deafness. A SOAP OPERA Coronation Street is Great Britain's most popular TV soap opera program. The first episode took place in 1960 - and it continues nowadays. Characters come and go. And did Coronation Street ever have a deaf character? Yes, Freda was that deaf character. She appeared in a 2006 episode - and she is coming back, newly engaged with her fiance in tow. And yes, the performer playing the Freda role is deaf - Ali Briggs. ASKING TO BAN A WORD The Little People of America are asking the FCC to enact a ruling to ban the use of the word "midget" on broadcast TV. We, the the deaf, are deeply offended by such words - deaf and dumb, deaf-mute. Should we ask the Congress to ban such words from being uttered anywhere? THE DEAF AND THE MILITARY Could the deaf join the Armed Forces and fight to protect USA? In Israel, we have deaf citizens serving in the Israeli military forces. And during the Civil War there was a number of deaf fighters on both sides. If military officials are uncomfortable with the deaf fighting in the war, then here is a suggestion - allow the deaf to join the military forces and have them serve in the background - providing support to the frontline fighters. This is exactly what most of our deaf firefighters do - provide support in the background. Just an idea. Just a suggestion. MANY FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE A LINK WITH THE DEAF - Rupert Murdoch, famous media mogul Rupert's mother, Elisabeth, was a founding member of the Deafness Foundation of Victoria, in Australia WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? a teacher, introducing the interpreter in the classroom said: the interrupter for the deaf if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series After you have decided that Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) may be right for you in a high school or university setting, now you need to decide if you will be using onsite CART or remote CART. There are many benefits and a few drawbacks to both of these options. Onsite CART is when the CART provider is physically present in the classroom with the student. The CART provider connects his or her steno machine to a laptop computer which is placed in front of the student, and the student is able to read what the CART provider is writing to the laptop screen. One of the major advantages to onsite CART is that the CART provider can see and hear everything that is going on in the classroom. It is oftentimes easier to hear and understand someone when you can see the person speaking than it is over a phone line or Internet connection. If an instructor is using PowerPoint, a chalkboard, or a handout, an onsite CART provider can see what is being referred to and fingerspell words that are new or unfamiliar. Another advantage is that there is personal communication between the CART provider and the user of these services. A facial expression, a nod of the head, or a gesture can sometimes help to facilitate communication. An onsite CART provider could be a great advantage when having a small-group discussion. ................................................................ ................................................................ weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://www.deafdigest.com updated every Monday ................................................................ ................................................................ News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (PSD) closed its high school department in June 1984. Is the high school department coming back? That was the rumor making its rounds. Joseph Fischgrund, the PSD headmaster said "the issue of re-establishing the secondary program is a priority in the school's strategic planning process and is of great interest to all of us. The planning process will address this issue in the fall." (editor's note: the school now has a thriving high school department; Fischgrund has retired and Larry Taub is the school's first deaf headmaster) .. News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: As we keep tabs on Tour de France to see how our champion cyclist Lance Armstrong is doing (will he win his 6th championship?) do keep in mind that one of the competing teams is sponsored by the Phonak Hearing Systems. (editor's note: Phonak is no longer a sponsor) ....
